ONDON — The Inland
Northwest Musicians will
present the Inland Northwest
Orchestra, under the direction
of R. Lee Friese, in concert at
Condon High School, 210 E.
Bayard St., at 4 p.m. Sunday,
May 1.
Admission is free of charge
with donations welcome.
This concert is sponsored by
Murray Drug and other business-
es in Condon and the Gilliam
County area.
Amanda Takagi, current board
member for Inland Northwest
Musicians, helped organize this
concert.
The orchestra will include a
robust percussion and full brass
and woodwinds, along with a
string section. According to Lori
Johnson, who is with the INWM,
“this is the fi rst time in two years
the large expanded group has
been able to off er this type of
literature to the public.”
Here is a look at the program,
provided by the INWM:
• “Selections from ‘West Side
Story’” with lyrics by Stephen
Sondheim and music by Leon-
ard Bernstein features familiar
tunes that all who have seen
the musical should recognize.
• “Music for Orchestra” by
Czech-American composer
Vaclav Nelhybel is a work that
utilizes varying rhythms and
chordal harmonies to create a
unique orchestral experience.
• “Tone Poems,” which are piec-
es of orchestral music that
evoke the content of a poem,
short story, novel, painting or
landscape.
• “Mississippi Suite,” by Ameri-
can composer Ferde Grofé
and arranged by Merle Isaac,
is a work that depicts scenes
along the Mississippi River
from the headwaters in Min-
nesota down to New Orleans.
• “Finlandia,” written by Finn-
ish composer Jean Sibelius
in 1900, is a piece mostly
featuring rousing and tur-
bulent music, representing
the national struggle of the
Finnish people to preserve
their independence from the
Russian Empire. Toward the
end, a calm comes over the
orchestra, and the serene and
melodic Finlandia Hymn is
heard. Often incorrectly cited
as a traditional folk melody,
the Hymn section is of Sibel-
ius’ own creation.
