Elizabeth “Betty” C. Brunette
Ray Bowman
1934 - April 11, 2022
March 2, 1936 - March 20, 2022
Elizabeth “Betty” C. Brunette died
peacefully in her home on April 11,
2022. She was born in 1934 and raised
in New York City and Montrose,
New York. At age 15, she went to
the University of Chicago. She then
received her doctorate in psychology
from Harvard University. She married
Andre Paul Brunette in 1957. They
moved west, had four children in
five years, and moved to Pendleton in 1973. She and Paul
designed and built a beautiful house in the Blue Mountains
where they lived for the next 45 years.
Betty had multiple positions as an administrator of mental
health services, including working for the state of Oregon
for many years. She developed and ran several private,
nonprofit behavioral health organizations in Pendleton,
including a program for pregnant and parenting women
with substance use disorders and their children. Through
her work, she helped many people in need.
Betty enjoyed nature, appreciated the outdoors, and
embraced country living. With family and friends, she hiked,
backpacked and skied all over the West. She loved literature
and music. She sang and played cello in the latter years of
her life. She served on the board of the Pendleton orchestra
and chorale for many years. Fearless about learning new
things, and ever thorough, she read all instruction manuals
from beginning to end. She could build a bookshelf, bake
bread, plow a driveway and set up a new computer.
Betty was also an enthusiastic tennis player from an
early age, playing and competing locally and across the
U.S. She achieved national ranking in the latter part of her
tennis career. She built the indoor Pendleton Tennis Center
in 1987 and played tennis there with friends for many years.
In 2021, her tennis friends formed a not-for-profit business
in order for Betty to give the Tennis Center to this company
for the benefit of the Pendleton-area tennis community.
Betty is survived by her children and their partners,
Andrew (Amy Hamm), David, Mary (Mark Feigl) and
Hal, her grandchildren, Kate, Jacob, Michael, Emily, Noah,
Grace, James and Eve, her sister and her husband, Molly
and Clark Naylor, as well as many nieces and nephews and
their children. She was predeceased by her husband, Andre
Paul Brunette. A memorial service will be held on Saturday,
July 9, at 4 p.m. at her home. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to Oregon East Symphony and Chorale
(www.oregoneastsymphony.org/home) in her memory.
Online condolences may be sent to

Ray Bowman passed away on
Sunday, March 20, 2022. Ray was
born on March 2, 1936, in Pend-
leton, Oregon, the youngest of
three boys to Kenneth and Jose-
phine Bowman. Ray grew up with
his family on a wheat farm north
of Pendleton, near Cold Springs
Grange. In 1956, he married his
high school sweetheart, Mary Lea
(Burton), three years after their auspicious meeting in a
hog pen at the Pendleton Jr. Livestock show.
In his youth, Ray joined the FFA, played football un-
der legendary coach Don Requa, and spent time work-
ing the family farm. After marriage, starting a family
with Mary Lea, and graduating college from Oregon
State University, Ray worked for the Forest Service in
small towns of southern Oregon. In 1967, he moved his
young family back to Pendleton to take over operation
of the family farm.
Ray and Mary Lea raised their three children — Ron,
Jan, and Kathleen — on the farm while also becoming
mainstays of their community. As a member of the Elks,
Ray volunteered his time in community works, partic-
ularly around Round-Up. He volunteered in the annual
Cowboy Breakfast, assisted with parades, and worked
for decades as part of the Happy Canyon pageant. Pre-
ferring to be behind the scenes, Ray spent most of his
years with the show as crew for the “silhouette” act,
often bringing one of his children with him. Eventually
he moved on stage letting his humorous side show as
Doc. Hal A. Tosis.
Throughout his life, Ray was known for his quick
sense of humor and the ever present twinkle in his
eyes. Ray was active in the Pendleton Grain Grow-
ers, serving on the Board of Directors, and community
events, and winning the Best Beard (Salt and Pepper) in
the Pendleton Centennial celebration. A familiar pres-
ence at all of their children’s activities, Ray was always
ready to lend a hand building parade floats, hosting barn
parties, or giving rides in the wheat truck.
In retirement, Ray and Mary Lea travelled the world,
particularly enjoying Alaska and Hawaii, as well as ex-
tended RV trips in the US, and travel to Europe, Aus-
tralia and New Zealand. They eventually moved to
Lincoln City (2000), followed by McMinnville in 2009
where they were closer to family.
Ray was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary
Lea, his parents and brothers. He is survived by his
three children, 11 grandchildren, and four great-grand-
children.
A simple graveside interment service is planned for
Saturday, April 30, at 10 a.m. at Olney Cemetery in
Pendleton. All are welcome to attend.
Paul Louis Thomas
September 15, 1936 - April 14, 2022
On April 14, 2022, Paul Louis
Thomas, loving husband of Shirley
and father of two daughters, Dani-
ta, and Katy, passed away at the age
of 85 and is now with his Heavenly
Father.
Paul was born in Portland, Or-
egon, on Sept. 15, 1936, to Virgil
and Hattie Thomas. He attended
public school there, playing city
league baseball and coaching Little
League. He was a proud graduate of Grover Cleveland
High School and talked often about his fond memories
and good friends made there. He had a custom show car
that won many awards and attracted all the girls.
Paul was in the Naval Reserve for eight years as a
radarman and his first job was with Union Pacific Rail-
road in yard operations. He then worked for Equifax as
an insurance investigator. He transferred to Pendleton,
Oregon, where he met Shirley Niles, while investigat-
ing her car insurance application. They started dating
a short time later and married on Aug. 15, 1964. His
version of the story is that she only decided to date him
after she came to his house with a friend for a no-host
barbecue and he traded the hamburger she brought for
his steak.
Upon retiring from Equifax, Paul spent a number
of years working independently, auditing and perform-
ing flooring checks before fully retiring. In 2017, they
moved to Kennewick, Washington, to be closer to fam-
ily as his health was declining.
While in Pendleton, Paul was active in leadership
with his church for many years. He officiated high
school football and baseball games and was excited to
meet Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin when he escort-
ed them onto the field during the Shriner’s East-West
football game in Baker City, Oregon, where they were
filming “Paint Your Wagon.” If only it could’ve been
his hero, John Wayne.
Paul enjoyed being an active member of the Pendle-
ton community and participating in local activities and
made many special friendships there. He fished on the
Nehalem River as a child with his father and resumed
it again as an adult when he purchased a boat and spent
many happy years salmon fishing again on the Nehalem
with his friends and sons-in-law.
Paul and Shirley attended all the school events that
their daughters were involved in. When the girls were
younger, they took many family trips to Wallowa Lake
and the Oregon coast that made lifelong memories, and
more recently enjoyed taking trips to these places with
their families including grandchildren and great-grand-
children. Above all else, Paul was a loving husband, fa-
ther, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved being
with the kids and was always full of jokes, tricks and
made-up songs.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and
Hattie, his infant sister, Delores, and son-in-law, Da-
vid Dunn. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley,
daughters, Danita (Craig) Tullis, Katy (Ben) Bossert,
grandchildren, Tyler (Mieko) Tullis, Jessica (Kyle)
Hutchinson, Jenna (Mathew) Vogel, and great-grand-
sons, Nolan, Barrett and Jonah, who affectionately refer
to him as “Papa Paul.”
Paul was so important in the lives of his children and
grandchildren, and will forever live in our hearts, but
we rejoice knowing that Papa Paul is now in the arms of
the Lord and at peace.
The family will be having a small, private cele-
bration of life. Brookside Funeral Home is caring for
the family. Memories and condolences can be shared
at www.brooksidefuneral.com.
