A6 COMMUNITY East Oregonian Pendleton Outdoor School Program plans its 50th session celebration Tuesday, April 19, 2022 Spring River Cleanup is Saturday in Pendleton East Oregonian East Oregonian PENDLETON — A celebration is in the works to mark the 50th session of the Pendleton Outdoor School Program. The event is April 29 at Buck Creek Cabins on the Umatilla National Forest and open to former ODS campers, counselors, field study volunteers, teachers and community supporters. The plan- ning committee is working to connect with these groups and indi- viduals to invite them to the event. Since the early 1970s, Pendleton sixth graders have ventured to Buck Creek Cabins and the U.S. Forest Service’s Corporation facility on the banks of the Umatilla River. There, students have applied skills developed in the classroom to real- life situations in the natural envi- ronment. The event includes dedication ceremonies to name three build- ings in honor of individuals who contributed their time, talents and skills to the program: the Cook- house will honor Bob McMillan, the Bunkhouse Jim Christensen and the Ranger Cabin the late Vern Willcox. Due to limited parking at the ODS site, the Intermoun- tain Education Service District is providing transportation via Mid Columbia Bus Company from PENDLETON — Round up your family, friends and colleagues and volunteer for a morning along Pendleton’s River Parkway and the banks of the Umatilla River, beau- tifying the area. And maybe take home a tree or other plant as well. The annual Spring River Cleanup is Saturday, April 23, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Participants meet at Roy Raley Park, 1205 S.W. Court Ave., Pendleton, and should bring sturdy shoes, a bottle of water and a willingness to pick up litter along the Umatilla River. Stewards of the Umatilla River Environment, or SURE, Umatilla Basin Watershed Council and Pendleton Parks & Recreation sponsors the event and provide safety information, gloves and trash bags. Last year, volunteers removed almost 1,700 pounds of trash from the banks East Oregonian, File Biological research technician Tami Johlke, with the USDA Agricultural Re- search Center, teaches a class on soil erosion in May 2015 at the Pendleton School District’s Outdoor School in the Blue Mountains east of Pendleton.
