Candace Corleone Colbert
July 1, 1945 - March 21, 2022
Candi was preceded in death by
her husband, Charles Monroe Col-
bert; her mother, Phylliss Patricia
Ormandy; and her father, Walter
Ingvold Pearson. She is survived
by her son, Cameron Campbell,
his wife, Melissa, and five grand-
children; brothers, Duke Christian
Pearson, Volney Patrick Gay; and
sisters, Victoria Caravello and Liss
Gay.
Candi was born in Portland, Oregon, and was edu-
cated in Portland Public Schools. She worked for many
years as a nurse assistant in Portland hospitals.
As “Second Mom” for her three younger siblings,
Candi came to nursing with ready-made kindness and
skill. Candi was an eccentric, artistic, passionate wom-
an whose sense of humor gave her almost invincible
powers. She deeply appreciated beauty and art, and her
home was like an art museum. She was an avid reader
who enjoyed philosophical, mystical and metaphysical
books. She found joy in criminal justice and advocacy
work, and she cared for those who were less fortunate.
She loved to give presents, and she was famous for her
care packages. Candi also loved Elvis. Her younger
brother regrets that his unkind imitation of Elvis almost
spoiled the moment when she saw him on “The Ed Sul-
livan Show” on Sept. 9, 1956.
Candi had been married only a brief time when her
husband was killed in a car accident. She had to cope
with young widowhood while being a single parent
to her infant son, Cameron, born in September 1971.
In that circumstance and many others, Candi showed
courage in the face of great obstacles. From one of her
poems:
I would like to live willingly without bonus.
Using gratitude to remember mercy. Without self-
pity.
Becoming lenient with forgiveness. With a heart to
nurture.
Leaving the road less traveled. With my footprints.
Replenishing my tapestry. As a living epistle for my
heirs.
While holding the pieces of the heart. Reconciliation
can occur.
The significance of the unvarnished glimpses
Becomes transparent over God's victory.
Remembrance events are still in planning.

ties and will accommo-
date more students, which
will help to alleviate over-
crowded conditions at
the remaining sites. The
increased campus sizes of
the new buildings, along
with capacity issues across
the remaining campuses,
necessitates adjustments
to elementary and middle
school attendance boundar-
ies,” according to the press
release.
The release explained
the district administration
and the boundary commit-
tee, consisting of parents,
board members and school
personnel, presented the
boundary proposal to the
board. The committee
analyzed school attendance
areas, population growth,
housing density studies
and feeder school scenar-
ios. Middle school bound-
aries will be determined by
a family’s physical address
and where it falls relative to
Highway 395, to the west or
the east. Students of Desert
View, West Park and Rocky
Heights elementary schools
will attend Armand Larive
Middle School, and High-
land Hills, Sunset and
Loma Vista Elementary
students will attend Sand-
stone Middle School.
“Adjusting boundar-
ies is a community eff ort,”
Tricia Mooney, superinten-
dent of schools, said in the
press release. “Thank you
to the boundary committee
members for their insight
and time. The team made
every effort to affect as
few students as possible;
although, some changes
were necessary to fi ll the
new school and relieve
crowding at the remaining
campuses.”
Letters from the district
went to k indergar ten

family of their child’s school

The school district also

Shirley Arlene (McKinnon) Ward Mentzer
Carlene Hahn
April 14, 1941 - April 6, 2022
July 21, 1936 - March 10, 2022
Shirley was born in Baudette,
Minnesota, on April 14, 1941, and
died on April 6, 2022, at Suttle
Care in Pendleton, Oregon.
Shirley was the daughter of Bill
and Vicky McKinnon, joining her
older sister, Beverly, and brother,
Charles. She always made jokes
about being the middle child. The
McKinnon family were blessed
with twin boys, Donny and Denny, along with the baby
sister of the family, Valerie. Shirley was preceded in
death by her parents and her sisters.
As the stories have been told over the years, one
day when Shirley was 6 years old the six children, Bill
and Vicky loaded up and left Minnesota, headed for
Mitchell, Oregon, where Shirley attended school.
Shirley married Kenly Jason Ward (later divorced)
and they lived in Long Creek, Oregon, where they
added Curtis Jason Ward and Cathy Kay Ward-Stelk.
Living the life of a logging family led them to the
Woods Camp on the North Fork of the John Day River.
Several years of adventure and memories were lived at
the Woods Camp, where the saying “it takes a village to
raise kids” originated. The family moved to Pilot Rock
in 1970.
Shirley was a full-time homemaker and also worked
at the Pilot Rock Grocery and Drug Store. She never
missed Curtis’ and Cathy’s school events. Shirley went
to beauty school and worked locally until retiring.
Shirley was blessed in marrying one of the most
patient men in the world, Norman K. Mentzer. Norm
and Shirley lived a happy life of 20-plus years in
Pendleton, Oregon, enjoying trips to the Coast, back to
Minnesota and to Arizona, making stops and detours to
every casino that was calling them.
Norm preceded Shirley in death on Dec. 2, 2018. She
was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Ken G.
Stelk, in 2013. Shirley loved and lived for her children,
Curtis and Cathy, and stepchildren, Tom, Andrew
and Lani, along with loving all her grandchildren,
step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
Shirley always had a pot of coffee on for friends
and family to stop by and visit. She was a wonderful
cook and was well known for her macaroni salad and
huckleberry cheesecake at most family events. She
enjoyed reading, shopping and collecting antiques,
especially dishes.
Memorial contributions can be forwarded to the
Pilot Rock Education Foundation, P.O. Box 174, Pilot
Rock, Oregon, or Hermiston Hospice, 645 W. Orchard
Ave., Hermiston, Oregon.
A graveside service will be held Friday, April 15,
2022, at 1:30 p.m. at the Pilot Rock Cemetery. There
will be refreshments following the service at the Life
Church, 222 SW Third St., Pilot Rock.
Carlene Hahn, 85, a longtime
resident of Pendleton, Oregon,
died on Thursday, March 10, 2022
at Meadowbrook Senior Living
Center in Baker City, Oregon,
with her beloved parrot “Jade” at
her side.
Carlene was born July 21, 1936,
in Pendleton, Oregon, to parents
Dave and Lee Coughenower.
She attended school in Pendleton where she was born
and raised, graduating high school in 1954. Following
high school, she attended college at Oregon State
University.
In 1957, she married Jack Kinnaman, and together
had two children, Brent and Bekki. They divorced in
1973. Carlene married Lindy Hahn in 1975 along with
his children, Ron, Doug, Melinda and stepdaughter,
Carla.
Carlene worked as a legal secretary for Kottkamp
& O’Rourke from 1965-1998. After she retired, she
volunteered many hours memorializing Umatilla
County history by sorting and identifying pictures at
the Heritage Museum and the Pendleton Hall of Fame.
Carlene’s hobbies in high school included riding
in parades on her horse “Windy” and going to horse
shows. After she married Jack they joined a bowling
league for many years. When she married Lindy,
they started breeding and showing basset hounds.
Her daughter, Bekki, started raising guide dog puppies
for the blind in high school, which she then continued
herself after Bekki graduated. She was a true animal
lover. It was like a petting zoo on their 5-acre farm.
She had donkeys, sheep,
sheep dogs, pigs, geese, ducks and lots of basset
hounds. Carlene and Lindy enjoyed being full-time
RV’ers after they retired. They would spend time in
Benson, Arizona, for the winter and Pendleton in the
summer, until Lindy’s death in 2007.
Carlene was a dedicated Pendleton Round-up fan.
She had front row box seats with her best friend from
Jr. High School, Martha Sue Powers. The two never
missed a year attending the Round-up for 62 years.
Let’er Buck!
Carlene was preceded in death by her parents and
husband, Lindy Hahn. She is survived by her children,
Brent (Cindy) Kinnaman and Bekki (Rick) Hurley;
stepchildren, Ron and Doug Hahn, Melinda Fearn and
Carla Thorgersen; brother, Doug (Linda)
Coughenower; grandchildren, Ryan and Mikayla
Kinnaman and John and Megan Hurley; great-
grandson, Easton Kinnaman.
For those who would like to make a memorial
donation in memory of Carlene, the family suggests
the Round-Up Hall of Fame Association or Guide
Dogs for the Blind through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral
Home and Cremation Services, PO Box 543 Halfway,
