Mixed media exhibit on
display at Tamástslikt
Cultural Institute

ISSION — Tamástslikt Cul-
tural Institute has opened
its first exhibit since 2019.
Curated by Sheehan Gallery at
Whitman College, “You Are Here”
is, according to a press release,
“a mixed-media exhibit created
to support a college course
on Indigenous aesthetics and
explores themes related to place
and identity. Many of the artists
exhibited have personal con-
nections to indigeneity and draw
from personal and collective
histories and memories.”
The exhibit is open through
May 14.
The show includes painted
portraits by Ric Gendron, a mem-
ber of the Arrow Lakes Band of
the Confederated Tribes of the
Colville Reservation; lithographs
that merge historical photos with
traditional quilt patterns by Ap-
sáalooke artist Wendy Red Star;
dramatic landscapes by James
Lavadour, a member of the Walla
Walla Tribe; and fiber art pieces
constructed from wool blankets
and embroidered by Marie Watt, a
member of the Seneca nation will
be on display.

CULTURAL INSTITUTE
Tamástslikt is owned and
operated by the Confederated
Tribes of the Umatilla Indian
Reservation. All paid admission is
good for two consecutive days.
A Blue Star museum, Tamástslikt
is one of the many museums
across the nation that offers free
admission to families of active
duty servicemen and women
year-round. Free regular admis-
sion is extended to members
of the CTUIR and Inwai Circle of
Friends as well as to card-carry-
ing members of partner institu-
tions: Oregon Historical Society
and Fort Walla Walla Museum.
Free family passes are avail-
able at local Eastern Oregon
libraries. AAA members receive
$1 off admission.
In addition to the museum and
interpretive center, Tamástslikt
operates a museum store, café,
and offers meeting room rentals.
The Museum Store and per-
manent exhibits are open from
10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday.
Kinship Café is open from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday.
