ety of services and programs
available at local libraries.

And April 3-9, she said,
is a great time to highlight
the essential role librar-
ies, librarians and library
workers play in transform-
ing lives and strengthening
communities. The theme for
this year’s National Library
Week is “Connect with Your
Library,” which promotes

the idea that libraries are
places to get connected to
technology by using broad-
band, computers and other
resources. Libraries also off er
opportunities to connect with
media, programs, ideas and
classes, in addition to books.
Most importantly, libraries
also connect communities to
each other, McCusker said.
Libraries of all types
continue to go above and
beyond to keep their commu-
nities connected by expand-
ing resources and embracing
inclusion in their program-
ming, resources and collec-
tions. Libraries across the
country are making a diff er-
ence in people’s lives by
providing electronic learning
resources like online home-
work help and wifi access for
students and workers who
may lack internet access at
home.
McCusker encourages the
public to show their appreci-
ation and support for librar-
ies by visiting their library
in person or online, follow-
ing them on social media and
using the hashtag #National-
LibraryWeek.

Pianist to perform
in Hermiston
HERMISTON — An
evening of piano music is
featured during an upcoming
concert in Hermiston.
John Nilsen, who was
born in Seattle, moved with
his family a few years later
to Portland. He began study-
ing classical piano at age 6,
and later picked up the guitar.
The award-winning musician
founded the Magic Wing
recording label in 1987.
As part of his “What
A Trip” Tour, Nilsen will
perform April 8, 7 p.m. at the
Hermiston First United Meth-
odist Church, 191 E. Gladys
Ave. Admission is by dona-
tion.
A graduate of South-
ern Oregon University, the
school recognized Nilsen in
1995 with the Distinguished
Alumnus Award for his
outstanding achievements
and leadership in the fi eld of
performing arts. Also, he was
selected as a Yamaha Signa-
ture Piano Artist in 2021 in
recognition of his musical and

1:11 a.m. — Pendleton police received
a report of an armed person in the area of
Southeast Frazer Avenue and South Main
Street.
4:08 a.m. — Hermiston police received
a 911 report of a physical domestic distur-
bance on East Sunset Drive.
10:19 a.m. — Stanfi eld police responded
to Echo High School, 600 Gerome St., Echo,
after a 911 call reporting a parent was caus-
ing a disturbance in the school offi ce.
12:36 p.m. — Umatilla police responded
to a fi ght at Clara Brownell Middle School,
1400 Seventh St., Umatilla.
3:52 p.m. — A 911 caller on Pruned-
ale Road, Milton-Freewater, reported his
neighbor’s aggressive dogs keep getting
out and have attacked his dogs and killed
some chickens.
4:06 p.m. — A caller reported the theft
of a stop sign from Northeast Elder Street,
Heppner.
6:02 p.m. — Umatilla police responded
to Hash Park, 440 Pendleton Ave., Uma-
tilla, after a 911 caller reported a restraining
order violation was occurring.
8:02 p.m. — Umatilla County sheriff ’s
deputies responded to Ruby Lane, Mil-
ton-Freewater, after a 911 call reporting a
domestic disturbance. The sheriff ’s offi ce
took a report.
11:25 p.m. — A 911 caller reported an
impaired driver was on Southwest 11th
Street, Hermiston, and heading toward
Highland Avenue.
TUESDAY, MARCH 29
8:03 a.m. — A 911 caller on Fifth Street,
Umatilla, requested police trespass her
mother from her residence. Umatilla police
responded.
8:21 a.m. — Umatilla County sheriff ’s
deputies responded to a robbery on Cac-
tus Drive, Hermiston.
8:42 a.m. — A 911 caller on Wanapa
Road, Umatilla, reported there is a large
dog that was injured. Umatilla police were
unable to locate the dog.
9:03 a.m. — A 911 caller on the 110
block of North Main Street, Milton-Free-
water, reported the previous night, a tres-
passer damaged some property.
9:12 a.m. — Union Pacifi c Railroad noti-
fi ed the Umatilla County Sheriff ’s Offi ce of
a train derailment at Hinkle Yard, Stanfi eld,
and emergency agencies did not need to
respond.
12:16 p.m. — A 911 caller on Highway
730, Umatilla, reported a domestic distur-
bance. Umatilla County sheriff ’s deputies
responded and took a report.

gon, reported his 13-year-old daughter
“ran off again” after being rude, disrespect-

5:40 p.m. — A 911 caller on Southwest
10th Place, Hermiston, reported a domestic
disturbance in progress. Umatilla County
sheriff ’s deputies responded.
9:56 p.m. — A 911 caller on Seventh
Street, Umatilla, reported a prowler. Uma-
tilla police responded and were unable to
locate the prowler.
11:23 p.m. — An Irrigon resident on
Brace Road reported a male stole her phone
and all the contents of her purse. She said
she would be at a neighbor’s house. The
Morrow County Sheriff ’s Offi ce responded
and took a report.

• Hermiston police arrested Tami Jean
Califf , 54, for fourth-degree assault.
• Umatilla police arrested Bradley John
Bettencourt, 33, for second-degree kidnap-
ping, menacing and on a parole violation.
March 29
• Umatilla County Sheriff ’s Offi ce
arrested Roy Lozano, 30, for, fi rst-degree
robbery, pointing a fi rearm at another and
menacing.

Vernon Carlyle Sutton
September 16, 1930 - March 26, 2022
Vernon Carlyle Sutton was born
on September 16, 1930, in Rainier,
Oregon, to parents, Lester and
Stella Sutton. He died on March
26, 2022, surrounded by his family
at his home in Hermiston, Oregon,
at the age of 91 years.
His family moved to Stanfield,
Oregon, when he was a young
child. In high school, he was a
standout in football and baseball and was a member
of the National Guard. Vernon was united in marriage
to Gloria Belles on Feb. 24, 1951. He then served four
years in the United States Air Force until his honorable
discharge.
Vernon returned home and worked in construction
for many years in Portland, Oregon, and later owned
and operated two restaurants. After retiring, he worked
part-time in the maintenance department of a retirement
community. Vernon remained active well into his late
80s, enjoying gardening, walking for daily for exercise
and volunteering at church and the senior center. He
was an avid Oregon Duck and Stanfield Tigers fan and
was a self-described “Different Breed of Cat.” He will
be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his children, Susan Sutton,
East Marion, New York; Stanley Sutton, Vancouver,
Washington; and Robert (Kim) Sutton, San Diego,
California; siblings, Aaron (Donna) Sutton, Stanfield,
Oregon; Beverly (Ben) Schott, Olympia, Washington;
Jean Davies, La Grande, Oregon; Gary (Frankie)
Sutton, Fremont, Nebraska; Maurine Hansen, Richland,
Washington; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years,
Gloria; a son, Carey; his parents; and four siblings, Ina,
Iva, Cecil and Elroy.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday,
March 30, 2022, at 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church,
Hermiston, Oregon.
A private burial will be held at the Hermiston
Cemetery, Hermiston, Oregon.
