P
ENDLETON — The
Stanfi eld girls basket-
ball team won its fi rst
state trophy on Satur-
day, March 5, it just wasn’t the
one the team wanted.
Lakeview outscored the
Tigers 21-11 over the fourth
quarter and overtime for a
48-41 victory in the fourth-
place game at the 2A state
tournament at the Pendleton
Convention Center.
“It’s a little bit of solace,”
Stanfi eld coach Daniel Sharp
said of the sixth-place trophy.
“It’s a good memory for the
seniors. For the younger kids,
maybe they can come back
and do a little better.”
The fourth-place trophy
was also the fi rst for Lakev-
iew, which fi nished the season
20-3.
“It’s our first trophy in
school history,” Honkers
coach Cody Blair said, “and
there isn’t one senior on the
team. They are all coming
back.”
The Tigers (23-7) led
22-15 at the half, and had a
30-24 lead late in the third
before Kenna Stratton drilled
a 3-pointer from the top of the
key with 8 seconds to make it
30-27 heading into the fourth.
Lakeview, which rolled out
a full-court press in the third
quarter, continued to press the
Tigers in the fourth, forcing
turnovers.
Stanfi eld’s Alexis Shelby
converted a pair of free throws
at 4:34 to put the Tigers out
front 34-29, but Stratton
scored inside, and Bridget
Shullanberger hit a 3-pointer
from the left wing to tie the
score at 34-34.
The Honkers had a 36-35
lead with 2:24 to play, but
Maggie Sharp put Stanfi eld on
top 37-36 with a basket at 1:27.
Lakeview had a chance to
take the lead with 1:09 left in
regulation, but Karlee Vick-
erman missed the front end of
a two-shot opportunity from
the free-throw line for a 37-37
game.
Maggie Sharp’s 3-pointer
at the buzzer went off the rim,
sending the game into over-
time.
Maggie Sharp and Mazie
Reeser hit back-to-back
baskets to give Stanfield a
41-37 lead 1:09 into over-
time. The Tigers would not
score again, while the Honk-
ers reeled off 11 consecutive
points, including fi ve by Strat-
ton.
Vickerman did not miss
from the free-throw line in
overtime, making good on all
six shots.
“We executed really well
in the fi rst half,” Coach Sharp
said. “Then we got frenzied
and started throwing the ball
all over the place. They got
aggressive and we got soft.”
Zuri Reeser led the Tigers

COOS BAY — For the
fourth time this season,
Umatilla took the court
against Vale. For the first
time, the Vikings came off
the court with the win.
Ulises Armenta led the
way with 20 points, and
Oscar Campos hit two key
free throws with 6 seconds
left in the game as Umatilla
fi nally got the better of East-
ern Oregon League cham-
pion Vale 50-47 on Saturday,
March 5, in the fourth-place
game of the 3A state tour-
nament at Marshfi eld High
School.
“We’ve won three of the
four quarters every time we
have played them,” Umatilla
coach Scott Bow said. “This
time we lost the fourth quar-
ter, but still had enough to
get the win. Vale is a tough
team and they are constant
fi ghters. To be able to walk
away with the win was pretty
good.”
The fourth-place trophy
is the fi rst one the Vikings
(18-10) have won at state
since placing sixth at the 2A
tournament in 2001.
“They’ve worked hard all
year,” Bow said of his team.
“That is the great thing about
this time of year, it comes
down to who can pull it all
together. The fact they could
get one (trophy) this year, is
special. I’m glad they brought
the energy this morning.”
Umatilla led 43-32 at
the end of the third quarter,
but Vale quickly turned the
tables.
John Wolf hit a pair of
jumpers in the fi rst minute
of the quarter to make it
43-36, and three free throws
by Tanner Steele pulled Vale
within 43-39.
Diesel Johnson drained
a 3-pointer with 5:04 to play

A free throw by Umatil-

44-42, but a Charlie Lamb

4:33 to play.
A three-point play by
Johnson gave Vale its fi rst

quarter, but Armenta used a
three-point play of his own
for a 47-47 ballgame with
3:32 to play.
Campos converted 1 of 2
free throws with 2:21 to play
as the Vikings took back the
lead. Neither team would
score again until there were
6 seconds left on the clock.
Umatilla called a time-
out with 9 seconds remain-
ing, and Bow reminded his
team that defense had been
its strength all season.

way it should have.”
Umatilla led 19-10 after

eight rebounds and three

Kaden Salamanaca chipped

I’m proud of all of them.”
Johnson led Vale (22-7)
