RECORDS Tuesday, January 25, 2022 FRIDAY, JAN. 21 SATURDAY, JAN. 22 12:15 a.m. — A 911 caller on Southeast 10th Street, Pendleton, reported a male and female were screaming. 3:17 a.m. — A caller reported there was a female at a location on South High- way 395, Hermiston, who was screaming “Get away from me.” Police were not able to make contact. 4:52 a.m. — Boardman police and Com- munity Counseling Solutions responded to a Boardman resident on a report of a per- son in mental or emotional duress. 9:31 a.m. — Pendleton police received a request to check on the welfare of a male wrapped in a blanket under Interstate 83 at the Southeast Third Street interchange. 3:17 p.m. — A resident on Anthony Drive, Boardman, reported a relative was causing a disturbance. Police responded and found this was verbal only. 4:45 p.m. — Hermiston police received a report of two “babies left in a car” on North First Street. 6:59 p.m. — A resident on Southeast Utah Avenue, Irrigon, reported people were driving around in a red all-terrain vehicle with no headlights or helmets in the fog. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office made contact and warned the individuals not to trespass and wear helmets on the ATV. 10:45 p.m. — Pendleton police handled a report of an assault at The Marigold Hotel, 105 S.E. Court Ave. 11:27 p.m. — Pendleton police respond- ed to the 100 block of Southeast Court Ave- nue on a report of an assault. Police issued a citation. SUNDAY, JAN. 23 12 a.m. — Boardman police received a report of an intoxicated man causing a dis- turbance on Willow Fork Drive. Police and medics responded and found there was a verbal altercation “exaggerated by alcohol.” 2:59 a.m. — Pendleton police initiated activity at Americas Best Value Inn, 201 S.W. Court Ave., for a domestic disturbance and made an arrest. 6:08 a.m. — A vehicle crashed into a tree at the Rustic Truck Bar & Grill, 100 W. An ambulance took one per- son to Good Shepherd Medical Center, Hermiston. 3:59 p.m. — An Irrigon resident on Northeast Seventh Street reported the theft of her mini bike. A Morrow County sheriff’s deputy took a report. 5:24 p.m. — A 911 caller at a laundromat on North First Street, Hermiston, reported a female there was refusing to wear a mask in spite of a sign requiring the use of masks. 10:02 p.m. — A Milton-Freewater Rite Aid employee reported the theft of several totes from behind the business, 105 S.W. (Erin McCusker 541-276-6449) Steven P. Sohappy June 19, 1935 – January 18, 2022 Steven P. Sohappy passed on Jan. 18, 2022. He was born to William and Margaret Joe Sohap- py on June 19, 1935, in McKay Creek (near Pilot Rock, Oregon). He attended the Old Pilot Rock Schoolhouse and later graduated from Pendleton High where he was a prestigious athlete both in school and around Indian Coun- try. He is preceded in death by his wife, Roselie P. Sohappy; his son, Victor R. Sohappy; and two babies. He is survived by sister, Clara Sohappy Jackson; children, Van Sohappy, Valerie Sohappy, Vin- cent Sohappy, Vivian Sohappy and Dominque “Dom” Sohappy; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchil- dren, great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. After high school graduation, Steve enlisted in the Marine Corps and was honorably discharged as a Peacetime Korean War Veteran. He married and raised his family in Pendleton. He worked in the farming busi- ness before he began his career as a certified diesel me- chanic. He was an avid sports fan and coached the Little League Team “Angels.” He gave his best, one time, at coaching a girls team called the Mission Mustangs. All the while, he was a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and partici- pated in Tribal Governmental Affairs where he served on numerous committees and commissions. He was a well-known Tribal and Religious Leader throughout. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, yard sales and driving up in the mountains. He gathered Indian Foods and traveled to other reservations to support and teach at ceremonial gatherings. One thing many will never forget is that he loved to laugh and tease in a good way. He will always be remembered and dearly missed as we celebrate the life and memories of Steve. Wayne Leon Allen Umatilla Oct. 13, 1956 — Jan. 14, 2022 Wayne Leon Allen, 65, of Umatilla, died Jan. 14, 2022, in Hermiston. He was born Oct. 13, 1956, in La Grande. ARRESTS, CITATIONS Kenneth Ray Schiewe Jan. 22 • Stanfield police arrested Ondrea Ranae Ellis, 26, for violating probation, violating a restraining order, multiple warrants and giving false information to police. • Umatilla Tribal Police arrested Erika Chris- tine Camara, 26, for vehicle theft and on a warrant for failure to appear. Jan. 23 • Oregon State Police arrested Gerardo Cruz Palacios, 42, for driving under the influence of intoxicants and supplying contraband. • Pendleton police arrested Jennifer Marie Reser, 32, for second-degree assault. • Morrow County Sheriff’s Office at 4:15 a.m. received a report that a man assaulted his girlfriend on Southeast Green Street, Hep- pner. The caller said the woman did not need medical attention but wanted to talk to deputies. Deputies subsequently arrested Brandon Vidal Gonzalez, 28, for misdemeanor fourth-degree assault. • Boardman police arrested Ismael Montiel De Los Santos, 33, for DUII, failure to carry or present a license, giving false informa- tion to police and on warrants. Main St., Heppner, each night and honking their vehicle horns at 1 a.m. 11:17 a.m. — A caller reported a per- son set up a tent against the back fence at Hodge Park, 160 E. Highland Ave., Hermis- ton, and is camping there. 12:07 p.m. — A resident at Green Acres RV Park, 80542 Paterson Ferry Road, Irri- gon, reported finding the steering wheel of a vehicle ripped apart but the keys were in the vehicle. 2:10 p.m. — A 911 caller reported a per- son in dark clothing was sitting in the grass on the shoulder of Interstate 84 eastbound near milepost 213, Pendleton, and has a rifle in his hand. 3 p.m. — A caller asked the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office to send extra patrols to an Irrigon residence where two teens were alone while their father was away. 3:42 p.m. — A Milton-Freewater resi- dent on the 1000 block of Northeast Third Avenue reported the theft of a 2003 Chev- rolet Cavalier. 4:14 p.m. — A Pendleton resident on Northwest Ninth Street reported a solicitor violation. 5:11 p.m. — The Morrow County Sher- iff’s Office received a report of a theft of a 2002 red Hyundai Elantra on South First Street, Irrigon. 6:01 p.m. — Hermiston police receive a report of juveniles in a van without super- vision on East Hurlburt Avenue. 8:38 p.m. — A resident at Castle Rock Apartments, 451 Tatone St., Boardman, reported her neighbor blocked her vehicle and she could not get out. Boardman police made contact and handled the situation. East Oregonian Jean (Border) Harding November 17, 1926 - January 15, 2022 Jean (Border) Harding was born Nov. 17, 1926, to James H. Border Sr. and Helen Edna (Reed) Border in Bozeman, Montana. She married Warren G. Harding on Nov. 25, 1944. They had two children, Michael and Mary.They lived in the Bozeman area for the first years, then Sher- idan, Wyoming, and Lewistown, Montana, eventually moving to Helena, Montana. Warren managed Gamers shoes for several years and Jean worked at AT&T in the data pro- cessing program. Jean also sold Avon in most of those places for over 40 years. She was always active in Beta Sigma Phi and played cards with family, friends and other organizations. She was quite a card shark and played cards up to a week before she passed away. She always wanted to win! When she was younger you could find both her and Warren on the dance floor even taking the kids that would eventually be asleep on the chairs while they danced. Those were the days! In 1968 after Mary was out of school and Michael was in the service they sold their home and ventured off to Pendleton, Oregon, where they opened a family shoe store. They eventually had shoe stores in Pendleton, La Grande and The Dalles. In 1982 they closed the Pend- leton store and moved to La Grande where they lived until they retired in 1992 and moved back to Pendleton. Jean kept working part-time in several motels, the Curio Shop and of course selling Avon until Warren became ill and passed away in 2001. She married Eddie Malmin in 2005, who also preceded her in death. Jean is survived by her son, Michael and his wife Vonda of Kalispell, Montana; her daughter, Mary and her husband Billy of Troutdale, Oregon; and five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren with another one coming in May. She also has a sister, Sandra Sullivan from Mesa, Arizona, and brother, Tom (Skip) Border from Belgrade, Montana, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James Border Jr. and John W. (Bud) Border.Jean’s fa- vorite pastimes were playing bridge, pinochle and hand and foot. She collected butterflies and her weakness was jewelry. She could accessorize any outfit! Burial will be at Olney Cemetery at the Mausoleum in Pendleton where she will be put to rest with her late husband, Warren. Honorary Pallbearers: Terry Dumont, Dennis Bauer, Ted VanBeek, Steve Border, Dean Bor- der, Don Border, Ryan Malmin, Nathan Malmin, Jay Border, Dick Border, Kirt Harding, Craig Harding and Tom Border. Kenneth Ray Schiewe, 92, of Weston, died Jan. 21, 2022, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center, Walla Walla. He was born July 13, 1929. She was born Jan. 15, 1968, the daughter of Lyman Scott and Judith Shillal. Dressing service was Monday, Jan. 24, at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, and the Washat service was Monday, Jan. 24, at the Mission Longhouse. Wirth Pendleton Sept. 22, 1950 — Jan. 20, 2022 Anita L. Wirth, 71, of Pendleton, died Jan. 20, 2022, at St. Anthony Hospital, Pendleton. Carolyn Jean (Tuck) Coke December 1, 1937 – December 25, 2021 Carolyn, 84 of Stanfield, passed away peacefully on Christmas Day. Carolyn was born on Dec. 1, 1937, in Magna, Utah, to Robert and Josephine Tuck. Carolyn spent her early years in Utah and graduated from Ben Lomond High School. She married Gordon Bailey in 1956 and started their family. Carolyn was active in sorority, an avid golfer, bowler and enjoyed snow and water skiing and fishing. The family moved to Stanfield in 1966, Forest Grove in 1973, and eventually Hillsboro. Carolyn worked as a Living Skills Instructor for the developmentally disabled, a job she loved. Her husband, Gordon, died unexpectedly in 1992. In 1998 she married Archie Coke of Tillamook. Carolyn returned to Stanfield with Archie. They enjoyed retirement around family, gardening, fishing, camping, ATVs and RVing. She loved playing cards and was a voracious reader. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Tuck and Josephine Langan; her sister, Diane; and brother, Dennis. She is survived by husband, Archie; children, Brad Bailey, Lynda Lester, Guy Bailey, Kristina Peterson, Jim Bailey and Gordon Bailey Jr.; two stepdaughters, Kellie Dotter and Kelsey Bailey; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and in-laws. Michael Frank Harer May 24, 1949 - January 14, 2022 Michael Frank Harer was born May 24, 1949, up the North Fork of the John Day River near Ukiah, Oregon, to Frank Stephen Harer and Edith Rose Harer. He joined an older sister, Stephanie Rose. The family lived on the river many years prior to moving to Dale, Oregon. Mike graduated from Ukiah High School in 1967. In July of 1968 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until 1974. Mike loved his county. He served three tours in Vietnam. Mike attained the rank of Sp- 5. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Army commendation Medal. Mike was a cowboy all his life, even competing in area rodeos riding bareback horses. He loved horses and mastered many. He always had a pitch stump burning in the woods whether he was hunting, camping or fishing. Mike worked cattle for many years on ranches in Oregon and Nevada. He also spent many years working in the woods, cutting logs and driving log truck. In 1980, he married Holly Jo Beers and adopted her two small sons, Kelly and Jaime. They also had one son together, Christopher. They later divorced. Survivors include his sons, Kelly Harer (Sherry) of Oklahoma, Jaime Harer (Valerie) of Oregon, and Christopher Harer (Bekky) of Texas; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Ukiah Rodeo or a local VFW. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
