The cougars won the big sky League title with an 11-0 record and were 22-5 overall. They advanced to the elite 8 of the 1a state volleyball tour- nament, where they lost to st. Paul in straight sets. The cougars raised $213 during their dig Pink Night and donated an additional $186 more to the st. anthony cancer care clinic, Pendleton. The money will help support local cancer patients in need. members of the volleyball team also help officiate junior high volleyball matches, and work with the players during their practices. most are also involved in asb or FFa. each winner of the Team of the month award will receive a commemorative trophy and $100 will be donated to the team’s program, courtesy of Les schwab Tires. The mustangs had four players selected to the 2a all-state football team first team — including three who earned honors on both sides of the ball. senior brock Hisler also was named the defensive back of the year, which includes linebackers and secondary players. Hisler earned first-team honors as a running back and linebacker, while senior Jace coe was selected as a wide receiver and defensive back, and senior conor brosnan as a line- backer and offensive lineman. sen ior blane mahoney earned honors as a defen- sive lineman. Hisler ran for 1,153 yards on Mahoney 158 carries and 12 touchdowns for the Mustangs, who finished the season 11-1 and lost to eventual state cham- pion coquille. Heppner also had Kason cimmi- yotti named to the second team as a receiver and defensive back, and center Toby Nation was selected as an offensive lineman. Weston-mcewen’s Levie Phil- lips was named to the third team as a running back and linebacker, while Theo White was chosen as a wide receiver and defensive lineman. Tigerscot Finn Irvine was a third- team offensive lineman, and Blane Peal earned honors as a third-team punter and honorable mention quar- terback. also named to the honorable mention team were Weston-mcew- en’s cameron reich (receiver), and Stanfield’s Carter Burnette (OL/DL), Gator Goodrich (kicker) and ryan elizares (defensive back). 2A ALL-STATE VOLLEYBALL stanfield outside hitter Zuri reeser was named to the 2a all-state f i rst team, and Reeser set ter Kately n Griffin was named to the honorable mention team. salem academy libero anna- belle brawley was named Player of the year, and melissa Holman was coach of the year after leading the crusaders to a 27-2 record and 2a state title. reeser, a junior, finished the season with 338 kills, 289 assists, 236 digs, 86 service aces and 20 blocks. Griffin led the Griffin Tigers with 386 assists. The senior also had 120 kills, 139 digs and 65 aces. The Tigers won the bmc title with an 11-1 record and earned a spot in the 2a state tournament. stanfield lost in the first round of state to Portland christian to finish the season with a 19-5 over- all record. Las VeGas — steer wrestler Jesse brown had some mixed results at the National Finals rodeo this past weekend, placing in one round and was just out of the money in two others. The baker city cowboy split fourth place with dakota eldridge during the second round on Friday, dec. 3. each man took down his steer in 3.7 seconds and pocketed $9,144. Brown In round 3 on dec. 4, brown had a time of 4.8 seconds and finished out of the money. brown had a stout steer during round 4 on dec. 5. He took his steer down in 5 seconds, but was two places out of picking up a check. “He was pretty full,” brown said. “He was big. There’s still six nights left and a lot of money.” Through four rounds, brown has placed in two and earned $14,805. He went into the NFr ranked second in the world standings behind Jacob Talley. a couple of quick runs by dirk Tavenner, Tristan martin and riley duvall saw them shoot up the leaderboard and brown drop to sixth. There are six more rounds of action in Las Vegas. brown is sitting fourth in the average with a time of 18 seconds on four runs. He is just 2 seconds off the leaders — martin and duvall. “With how much money there is in each round, the standings will change each night,” brown said. brown has kept busy with appearances and signings the past few days, and dec. 11 he will be helping out with the rascal rodeo — a simulated rodeo for people of all ages with physical and developmen- tal disabilities.
