BJ the DJ to spin
country roads
M I LTON-FR EEWA-
TER — After dropping
out of college in Texas,
Henry John Deutschendorf
Jr. headed to Los Ange-
les to pursue his musical
dreams. The singer-song-
writer achieved success
when Peter, Paul and Mary
had a No. 1 hit in 1969 with
his song, “Leaving on a Jet
Plane.” Two years later,
“Take Me Home Coun-
try Roads” became John
Denver’s fi rst big hit as a
singer.
BJ the DJ will spin
many of Denver’s tunes
during Oldies Night in
Milton-Freewater. The free
event is Saturday, Dec. 4,
7-10 p.m. at Wesley United
Methodist Church, 816 S.
Main St., Milton-Freewater.
Denver garnered 33 Bill-
board Hot 100 hit singles,
including eight which
reached the top 10. And four
that climbed all the way to
No. 1: “Sunshine on my
Shoulders,” “Annie’s Song,”
“Thank God I’m a Country
Boy,” and “I’m Sorry.”
Bob Jones also will share
tidbits about Denver’s life
— including the tragic
end of his life in a plane
crash. For more infor-
mation, contact Jones at
