He is the third son of Richard Joseph and Marjorie Catherine Niven Greiner, born on August 14, 1930. He was deeply rooted in the community and enjoyed connecting with family and friends in the area who share memories of ancestors, farming practices, and beloved characters. Tom attended grade and high school in Condon. During his growing up years, he was privileged to enjoy the activities of being a fam boy, being active in 4-H and other organizations, rodeoing throughout the region. After graduating from high school in 1948, the Thirtymile Boys (Tom and friends Art Hardie and Cy Flack) joined the Air Force (1950) and were stationed at Kirkland Air Force Base (AFB) in Albuquerque, New Mexico (NM). He spent many a weekend as a member of the Air Force Rodeo Team at service-sponsored rodeos and some action shots of him saddle bronc riding were featured in military newspapers. It was here he met Ann Wood, who graduated from Mountainair, NM, a small town in a ranching community located on the high mesas east of the city. As fate would have it, Tom and Ann really hit it off, as they had a lot in common, especially farming and ranching, love for the way of life in which both had grown up. They were married on November 7, 1953, in Albuquerque and returned to Mayville, where his parents Richard (Dick) and Marjorie lived and where Tom farmed with his uncle and aunt, Robert (Bob) and Jesse Schomp. A few years later, Tom and Ann began farming near Thirtymile, next door to his lifelong friend, Frank Burns, and continued to expand wheat and cattle operations over the many years and raise a family. They were married for nearly 68 years (11/07/2021) and continued to actively participate in the many community events sponsored in the county. Tom was very involved in 4-H, County Extension, SWCD, Oregon Wheat League, Cattlemen’s Association, and Farm Bureau, since they started farming operations in 1960, continuing through a move to Central Oregon in the 1990’s. Their involvement in 4-H stems from Tom’s early participation in the 1940’s. The Tenderloin Livestock Club began around 1944 and included taking calves to the annual Pacific International (PI) Livestock Exposition in Portland, a great experience for youngsters from a rural area. Of particular interest was that Tom and Ann hosted agricultural participants from around the world via the International Farm Youth Exchange Program (IFYE), in collaboration with the County Extension Office and Martin Zimmerman. Young Farmers from India, Cypress, Colombia and Germany all joined the family over the years, providing an opportunity learn from the visitors and visa versa. In the past 23 years, Tom has engaged in a variety of activities serving the community. From 2007 through 2015, Tom was on the Board of Directors for the Gilliam County Fair, helping to oversee the exhibits and livestock barns and supporting the annual high school rodeo. He is a lifelong member of St. John’s Catholic Church, in which his grandparents played a founding role. He served on the Gilliam County Historical Society Board of Directors (2000-2019) and has especially focused on the machinery and farm buildings. He and longtime friend Charles Stangel (deceased) teamed up to bring the Greiner/Quinn church from Mayville to the Historical Society grounds; the Museum continues to add exhibits on pioneering life, farming practices and interesting memorabilia from throughout the area, especially with a building just completed. He led and helped revitalize American Legion, Frank Burns Post #25. During a lifetime in Condon and Mayville, he also served on the South Gilliam County Health District, Summit Springs Center Board, agriculture organizations noted above and the Eastern Oregon Pioneer Association. At the time of his passing, he was the oldest Lodge Member of the Condon Elks Lodge (B.P.O.E. #1869). Tom is survived by the love of his life, Ann and two daughters: Anna Cathleen Greiner, PhD, and Janet Elizabeth (Greiner) O’Neill; her husband Bernard Joseph O’Neill, brother Glenn Greiner (Bonnie); cousins Janet Netherton (Bill), Evelyn Robinson, Robert Rohrbach (Neda), Bonnie Oads, Georgia Lousignot and Alterita Burns; and, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Join us in remembering Tom. “The Highlands they are a’callin’ you homeward: When Death's dark stream I ferry over (A time that surely shall come), In Heaven itself I will ask no more Than just a Highland welcome” (“A Highland Welcome”, Robert Burns) Our final words are those from his grandfather John Niven’s entry in the February 1925 Fossil Journal: “So let him sleep that dreamless sleep, Our sorrows clustering ‘round his head; Be comforted, ye loved who weep He lives with God, he is not dead” (Fossil Journal, IOOF, February 1925) Go in Peace Cowboy! We love you, Dad! Please consider a donation in Tom’s name to the Gilliam County Historical Society, PO Box 377, Condon, OR 97823 (especially for the Ag Building).
