‘Best of the West’
Harvest festival,
quilt show this
weekend in John Day

OHN DAY — Grant County
will celebrate the harvest
and all things quilting this week-
end, Oct. 15 and 16.
The Best of the West Harvest
Festival and Quilt Show will be
held at the pavilion at the Grant
County Fairgrounds, 411 NW
Bridge St., John Day, on Friday
from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday from
10 a.m.-6 p.m.
HARVEST FESTIVAL
The festival is the fi nale farm-
ers market of the season.
“There are all kinds of booths
selling wares for the last time of
the year,” said Samni Bell, owner
of BellyAcres Twisted Stitchery.

In addition to the market
vendors, the Best of the West
Harvest Festival will feature
food trucks, music, games for
the family, hay rides and a pie-
eating contest.
QUILT SHOW
This is the third year the quilt
show has been combined with
the harvest festival. The events
are sponsored by the Strawberry
Mountain Quilt Guild, Oregon
Rain, Grant County Greenhous-
es, BellyAcres Twisted Stitchery
and the Grant County Chamber
of Commerce.
Visitors to the quilt show will
have a chance to vote on the
winners for “Viewer’s Choice”
awards in several categories, and
a “Beyond our Border” award for
a quilt entered from outside Grant
County. The show also features
demonstrations and vendors
from Mount Vernon, Prairie City
and Burns.

“It’s going to be a mecca
of great deals for quilters,”
Bell said.
QUILT WALK
Although offi cially this week-
end, one facet has been going
on since July with the “Walk
Through the Old West” barn
quilt walk, which features more

than 30 stops across Grant
County.
“Some people visit every
single one — it’s like a scaven-
ger hunt,” Bell said.
Participants who collect
15 stamps from participating
businesses are entered into a
drawing for prizes at 5:30 p.m.
Oct. 16 — $250 cash for fi rst
place, $100 gift certifi cate to
Chester’s Groceries for second
place, or $100 in Grant County
Greenbacks for third place.
At the same time, winners
will be drawn for raffl e prizes of
a 4-foot-square wooden barn
quilt block and a king-size quilt.
Raffl e tickets will be sold at the
quilt show.
