RECORDS Thursday, August 5, 2021 East Oregonian A5 OBITUARIES Randy Peter Alexander Pendleton Jan. 12, 1953 — July 28, 2021 Randy Peter Alexander was born Jan. 12, 1953, at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendle- ton to Lillian Anita (Farrow) and Uriah Alexander. He passed away peacefully at home on July 28, 2021, at 68 years of age. He was the youngest of five children. Randy attended Pendle- ton schools until 1970. That year he met his future wife, Hilda Halfmoon, and they were married Nov. 1, 1973. They had two daughters, Sunni Dawn and Brandee Marie. Sunni passed away but left him two grandchil- dren, LaRiah Marie and Nicolas Pearce. Brandee died in infancy. Randy and Hilda have been raising the grand- kids for the past 10 years. They both were his pride and joy. Randy worked for USFS, retiring with 20 years service. He fought fires and later worked on fish habitat, even receiving a commendation from U.S. Department of Agriculture for his work on Thomas Creek. After the Forest Service he worked for a time with Bureau of Indian Affairs, and then moved from there to the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation as a wildlife technician. Randy was a talented artist, leather crafter, photog- rapher and archer. He played slow pitch for several years also. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Randy loved to spend time at the casino and made many new short-term friends each time he went. He also made friends at Davita Dialysis Center with both other patients and staff. He was the medicine man for several years in the Happy Canyon Night Show. Randy had a dry witty sense of humor and if he tormented you, he loved you. If he gave you the silent treat- ment, not so much. He was known as Hawk by lifelong friends and Uncle Beer by his nieces and nephews. He was PaPa or Pops to his grand- kids. He is survived by his wife and grandkids at home: brother Stan Alex- ander; sisters Marie (Butch) Dick and Barbara Guer- rero; numerous nieces and nephews; Alexander, Farrow and Hall cousins; and great-grandpups Pete, Jake, Nicky and Angel. He is preceded in death by his parents, both daughters and brother Les Alexander. Final viewing was Monday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. at Burns Mortuary, imme- diately followed by burial at Agency Cemetery. Elizabeth Louise ‘Bette’ McLaughlin Bend April 5, 1936 — July 18, 2021 Elizabeth Louise “Bette” McLaughlin passed away peacefully Sunday, July 18, 2021, at Partners in Care Hospice House of Bend, Oregon. She was blessed to be surrounded by loved ones in her last days. Bette Scharn was born April 5, 1936, to William and Louise Scharn in Pendleton, Oregon. She was a student at St. Joseph’s Academy all 12 years of her early education, and attended Seattle Univer- sity. Upon returning to Pend- leton to be near family, she began working at the Byers Avenue Clinic. She was soon introduced to Robert “Bob” McLaughlin by members of his family, and after a brief courtship they were married on April 24, 1965. They settled on the McLaughlin Family ranch, where they remained until their retire- ment in 2002. While on the ranch, they raised their five children. Bette was a housewife, cooking, ironing, shut- tling kids the 25 miles from sports practices, helping with their 4-H projects, and providing support as only a farm wife can do. In the mid-1980s, Bette returned to work in Pendleton as a medi- cal administrative assistant. She enjoyed “getting out” and found the work inter- esting. She also joined the cross-country ski club in Pendleton and made many fond memories of traveling to Anthony Lakes and other ski areas on the bus. After selling the ranch in 2002, Bette and Bob moved to Bend, Oregon, to be closer to children and grandchil- dren. Once they made their new home there, they busied themselves attending the symphony and joining Touch of Class Tours for many gambling and sightseeing trips around the Northwest. Bette also enjoyed playing the piano, drawing, painting, and attending group swim classes. Especially joyful memories were Halloween trick-or-treating at Grandma and Grandpa’s, the annual Fourth of July celebration at their home watching the fire- works from Pilot Butte, and always having Grandma’s tasty cookies to greet you when you visited. Many of Bette’s grandchildren were blessed to have her nearby for babysitting duties and atten- dance at their activities. She is survived by her sister Pat Monagle, brother-in- law Terry McLaughlin, sister- in-law Margaret McLaughlin, son Stephen (R honda) McLaughlin, daughter Anne (Murray) Perkins, son Chris (Shari) McLaughlin, daugh- ter Shannon (Mark) Cham- bers, daughter Kelly (Jeff) Koker, 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and neph- ews. Bette always valued travel and education for her chil- dren and worked hard to ensure they had access to both. Those wishing to honor Bette’s memory can contrib- ute to their scholarship fund, established by their children. Intended recipients should be a graduate of Heppner High School, attending an Oregon public institution.
