arrested Juan Fernando Ponce, 30, on fel-
ony counts of second-degree burglary
and violating probation, and a misde-
meanor count of second-degree theft.
The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office
arrested Eric Sebastian Shaver, 44, on fel-
ony counts of first-degree burglary and
violating post-prison supervision con-
ditions, and misdemeanor counts of
third-degree escape, second-degree
criminal trespassing and failing to appear
in court.

From parades and community cele-
brations to fireworks shows (subject to
weather conditions), area communities
are gearing up to help commemorate
the Fourth of July. Events listed below
are scheduled on Saturday, July 3, and
Sunday, July 4.
Most celebrations feature free admis-
sion, with some activities (meals, fun
runs, raffles, etc.) charging a fee. Area
events include:
PENDLETON
Independence Day Parade
• July 4, 10 a.m.
• Downtown Pendleton
Starts at Pendleton City Hall, travels
east on Dorion Avenue to Main Street,
then west on Court Avenue to the Pend-
leton Convention Center. Veterans of
Foreign Wars “Let ’er Buck” Post 922

The event kicks off with the dedi-
cation of the new Funland Park. Then,
park activities will include a game zone,
bounce houses, food vendors, arts and
crafts booths, music by The Shades and
a fireworks show at dusk on the Hermis-

Boardman Rumble
• July 3, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Boardman Marina Park
Columbia Youth Soccer Club is host-
ing soccer competitions and a commu-
nity celebration. Be sure to purchase
raffle tickets, which are $15 each or five
for $50, for a chance to win some great
prizes. Items, which were donated by
the Walmart Distribution Center and La
Guadalupana, include two 75-inch Vizio
TVs, a small chest safe, carpet cleaner,

Open house features
Chinese history
JOHN DAY — Archaeologist with
the Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project
will hold an open house Saturday, July
3, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Kam
Wah Chung State Heritage Site, 125
N.W. Canton St., John Day.
Artifacts and exhibits will be on
display and archaeologists studying
19th century Chinese gold mining
sites and the John Day Chinatown will
be discussing their recent work and
answering questions.
This event takes place between two
large projects on the Malheur National
Forest: the Passport in Time Project and
the Southern Oregon University Labo-
ratory of Anthropology.
The PIT is a nationwide Forest
Service volunteer program where inter-
ested volunteers pair up with archae-
ologists and work together on heritage
projects on public lands. Most of the
Oregon Chinese Diaspora projects on
the Malheur National Forest have bene-
fitted from PIT volunteers contributions.
All aboard at Faith
Presbyterian Bible school
HERMISTON — A Rocky Moun-
tain Railroad Adventure is planned as
part of the vacation Bible school at Faith
Presbyterian Church, 1005 S.E. Ninth
St., Hermiston. Children do not have to
attend the church to participate.
Children 3 years old (and toilet-
trained) through fifth graders are invited
to climb aboard the train Monday, July
5, through Friday, July 9. Registration
begins at 8 a.m. daily and the boarding
time is 9 a.m. The session will chug along
until noon each day. The ride includes
Bible stories, songs, games and crafts.
