Ben Lonergan/East Oregonian A police offi cer peers inside of a train while searching for a subject who allegedly attempted to jump aboard the Union Pacifi c train near Southeast Frazer Avenue and Southeast 10th Street in Pendleton on Tuesday, May 4, 2021. Man fl ees police, fails to hop train PENDLETON — Police are searching for a man who reportedly attempted to jump on a train while fl eeing police after an incident in down- town Pendleton on Tuesday, May 4, according to Pend- leton Police Chief Charles Byram. Police fi rst responded to a report of a disturbance near Community Bank shortly before 2 p.m. The report said two men were fi ghting and one had a machete, accord- ing to Byram. Police later found a man riding his bike matching the description from the report of a man dressed in all black. Police attempted to stop the man, but he fl ed, and police lost him while in pursuit, Byram said. Later, police received a call from Union Pacific Railroad that a man was trying to hop on a train moving through Pendleton but fell off , prompting the train to stop. The man then ran away, leaving his bike and cellphone, which police found after arriving on scene, Byram said. The bike matched what the man had been riding earlier that day, Byram said, adding police are continuing to search for the man. He added that the police are confi dent they know who the man is, but declined to provide specifics because the case is an active investi- gation. Fire in Irrigon RV park destroys RV, displacing resident IRRIGON — A fire destroyed one recreational vehicle and damaged another at Green Acres RV Park in Irrigon early Tuesday, May 4, according to Boardman Fire Chief Mike Hughes. The fi re nearly spread to other nearby RVs, according to Hughes, but was held up by four residents with water hoses. Boardman firefighters received a report of the fi re at 4:17 a.m., arriving at the scene along with fi refi ghters from the Irrigon Rural Fire Protection District a few minutes later. By the time officials arrived, the RV was engulfed in fl ames. Meanwhile, four residents were spraying the adjacent RVs with water hoses to prevent the fl ames from spreading to the adja- cent trailers. Hughs said he was “super happy” that the residents responded how they did. “Obviously, it made our jobs a little easier,” he said. “We don’t always encourage civilians to take that action because they’re putting them- selves at risk. But they were doing what they had to do.” Firef ighters brought the blaze under control by 4:32 a.m. The f lames destroyed the RV and all the belongings of one park resi- dent, who is now displaced. The Red Cross is assisting the man in fi nding shelter, Hughes said. Damages are estimated at $2,000, Hughes said, and no injuries were reported. Offi cials have yet to deter- mine the exact cause of the fi re, Hughes said. One of the neighboring RVs suffered “minor damage,” Hughes said.
