Ward 541-276-2190) HERMISTON — The Hermiston School District Board of Education awarded Kirby Nagelhout Construc- tion Company the contract for construction of the Rocky Heights Elementary School bond project. T he compa ny w i l l construct a new, larger version of the elemen- tary school, paid for by the bond passed by voters in 2019. According to a news release, Kirby Nagelhout was the apparent low bid at $23,390,000. Superintendent Tricia Mooney said in a news release that the bid came in about $3 million below initial projections. “Community members can rest assured, with an independent review by the Bond Oversight Commit- tee, HSD will appropriately use community tax dollars throughout the implementa- tion of the November 2019 voter-approved bond proj- ects,” she said. The new Rocky Heights will be a single-stor y 73,500-square-foot building built to serve approximately 600 students, with 24 class- rooms and various commu- nal spaces, such as a library and gymnasium. The project also includes demolition of the existing building, fenc- ing, two new parking lots with drop-off areas, a main entry plaza, new play fields and playground equipment. The bid timelines were staggered for the two elementary school proj- ects, to encourage bidding by regional small- and medium-sized businesses, according to the release. Bid opening for the new Loma Vista Elementary School planned for East Theater Lane is scheduled for Wednesday, March 17. Loma Vista will include the same square footage, number of classrooms and outdoor campus features as the new Rocky Heights. Const r uct ion of bot h elementary school projects will begin in spring and are expected to finish during the summer of 2022. Prestige offers fall-prevention webinar PENDLETON — Falling at any age can be dangerous, but falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults. Prestige’s McKay Creek Estates invites community members to learn how to reduce the risk of falling at home with a free, 90-minute webinar on Thursday, March 18, at 1 p.m. The webinar will be hosted by licensed athletic trainer and senior fitness expert Adrian Cagigas, who will explain the factors that increase fall risk and provide attendees with the tools and resources they need to reduce their risk of falling. The risk of falling poses a serious threat to older adults and a greater threat to adults living with dementia or other cognitive impairments. In fact, individuals living with dementia are five times more likely to fall than older adults living without a cognitive impairment. To help reduce the risk of falling, Cagigas aims to teach seniors and their families how to protect themselves, or a loved one, by “fall-proofing” their homes. As a partner in active aging, Prestige is dedi- cated to offering programs and resources to help older adults enjoy active, healthy lifestyles. RSVP for this free fall-reduction webinar at PrestigeCanHelp.com. — EO Media Group NIE SUNDAY 11:03 a.m. — Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle was reported on West Linda Avenue in Hermiston.
