Start practicing your kiais and
defending yourself as the third
season of “Cobra Kai” comes to
the Netflix dojo on Friday, Jan. 8.
Making the move from YouTube
Red to Netflix, Seasons 1 and 2
are already available to stream
and Season 3 will pick up where
last season left off. From dojos in
trouble to senseis at odds with
one another and a life hanging
in the balance following a shock-
ing turn of events in Season 2,
there is no doubt that this new
10-episode season will have fans
hyped up and ready for more —
which is good because Season 4
is already “in training” (as stated
by Netflix). For those of you who
haven’t yet seen the first two
seasons, don’t worry. You can
still catch up with the 20 existing
episodes that the streamer has
picked up and watch as Johnny
Lawrence (William Zabka, “The
Karate Kid,” 1984) is inspired to
reopen his karate alma mater,
Cobrai Kai dojo, becoming sensei
to a group of teens all looking for
purpose, discipline and the means
to defend themselves. Among
his most promising students are
Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña,
“Parenthood”), a high school stu-
dent who is in need of confidence
and self-defense, and Eli “Hawk”
Moscowitz (Jacob Bertrand, “Kir-
by Buckets”), who joins Cobra
Kai following Miguel’s fight with
a gang of bullies in the school
cafeteria. A spinoff of the cult
classic “The Karate Kid” (1984),
this series blends heroes with
villains, the past with the present
and defence tactics with attacks

Jacob Bertrand, William Zabka and Xolo Maridueña in
“Cobra Kai”
in such a way that often makes it
difficult to know who to root for.
One thing that viewers can be
sure of is that Lawrence’s long-
standing rival, Daniel LaRusso
(Ralph Macchio, “The Deuce”),
will not stand by and watch the
action silently for long ... “Cobra
Kai” is produced by a team fea-
turing the show’s leading stars,
Zabka and Macchio, creators Josh
Heald (“Hot Tub Time Machine,”
2010), Jon Hurwitz (“Harold &
Kumar Go to White Castle,” 2004)
and Hayden Schlossberg (“A
Very Harold & Kumar Christmas,”
2011), and Hollywood magnate
Will Smith (“The Fresh Prince of
Bel-Air”).
“Pieces of a Woman” (2020)
Go on a stirring emotional jour-
ney with the heartbreaking new
film “Pieces of a Woman,” com-
ing to Netflix on Thursday, Jan.
7. Written by actress and screen-
writer Kata Wéber (“White God,”
2014) and featuring Hungarian
director Kornél Mundruczó in
his English-language film debut,
“Pieces of a Woman” is based on
the pair’s own harrowing life ex-
perience and tells their very per-
sonal story of earth-shattering
loss alongside a sense of betrayal
and the pending emotional fall-
out from an unexplained and
uncontrollable disaster. When
Boston couple Sean (Shia La-
Boeuf, “Fury,” 2014) and Martha
Carson (Vanessa Kirby, “The
Crown”) decided early on a home
birth for their first child, they hire
a midwife (Molly Parker, “House
of Cards”) and prepare for their
lives to change with the arrival of
their bundle of joy. Sadly, when
the midwife becomes flustered
and fails to properly perform her
duties, the couple loses the child,
and all their dreams of a happy
family life are dashed. Now faced
with an existential pain in the
wake of this horrific tragedy, the
couple has become no stranger
to the judgment and advice of
family and friends trying to help
the couple move forward. Amid
all of this, and while preparing to
go to court against the midwife
who now faces charges of crimi-
nal negligence, Sean and Martha
are doing everything they can to
move forward no matter what it
takes — even if that means tak-
ing time apart to heal indepen-
dently. Shot in Montreal, entirely
with a vintage 1990s Panavision
Zoom lens for a haunting, almost
dazed, spiritual effect, “Pieces
of a Woman” explores grief
from various personal, social
and religious standpoints, never
losing its raw energy or harsh
reality. Also starring Ellen Burstyn
(“Requiem for a Dream,” 2000)
as Martha’s devoutly Jewish
mother, the film also features
famed director Martin Scorsese
(“Goodfellas,” 1990) as one of
its executive producers and is
beautifully scored by legendary
composer Howard Shore (“The
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship
of the Ring,” 2001).
