A6 COMMUNITY East Oregonian Tuesday, September 29, 2020 COMMUNITY BRIEFING Soroptimist group announces education awards HERMISTON — Soroptimist International of the Greater Hermiston Area is currently accept- ing applications for their annual “Live Your Dream” Educational and Training Awards for Women. A pair of awards will be given in the amounts of $1,000 and $500. To be eligible, applicants must have the primary financial responsibil- ity for themselves and their dependents. Also, they must be attending or have been accepted into an undergraduate degree program or a vocational skills training program. Applications are avail- able and can be submitted online at bit.ly/LYDA-ap- ply. The deadline to apply is Nov. 15 and the recipi- ents will be announced in March. The winner of the $1,000 award may be considered for further awards at Soroptimist’s regional and federation level. Soroptimist Inter- national of the Ameri- cas created the awards in 1972 to help women around the world fur- ther their education and the economic well-be- ing of their families. Since 2007, the Hermis- ton group has given 22 of the awards — for a total of $15,000. The Baha’i Commu- nity of Pendleton, with sup- port from Pendleton Center for the Arts, is presenting side pickup Thursday, Oct. 1, and Friday, Oct. 2, from 3-6 p.m. at the arts cen- ter, 214 N. Main St., Pend- leton. Ideas for interactive designs that can engage others in a fun way can be found by searching Pinter- est for “interactive chalk art.” It’s recommended that participants work in open, unoccupied spaces like Brownfield Park or the Riverfront Park on Court Street, as well as neigh- borhood sidewalks. Event organizers recommend uti- lizing face coverings and safe distancing while mak- ing and viewing the fin- ished art, and as always, consideration for others.
