A10 SPORTS East Oregonian Wednesday, January 22, 2020 Workers preparing Miami stadium for Super Bowl By STEVEN WINE Associated Press MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The pounding of a sin- gle hammer echoed through the stands Tuesday in the Miami Dolphins’ stadium, the reverberations from the Super Bowl’s return to South Florida just beginning. Painters sprayed a logo on the newly laid grass while two men in hard hats dan- gled from a scaffold under a video board. Workers on the sprawling grounds out- side the stadium also bus- ily prepared the complex for the NFL title game on Feb. 2 between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. “We have upwards of 6,000 people working behind the scenes to get everything set up,” said Eric Finkelstein, NFL senior AP Photo/Brynn Anderson Preparations are underway during a tour of the Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday ahead of the NFL Super Bowl LIV football game in Miami Gardens, Fla. director of event operations. “You can hear it around us. And there’s a lot more work to go. But we feel really good about where we are in getting everything prepared.” The league offered a sneak peak at the stadium as Miami prepares to host the Super Bowl for the 11th time, the most of any city. It has been 10 years since the last title game in South Florida, however, and the Dolphins’ home has since undergone a $550 million renovation. The NFL said the upgrades were needed for Miami to remain competi- tive in bidding to host Super Bowls. “People who haven’t been here since the last Super Bowl will feel like they’re in a totally different stadium,” said Tom Garfi nkel, the Dol- phins’ president and CEO. Changes include four large video boards and a canopy to protect fans from rain, while the stands and suites have been reconfi g- ured. A plaza outside the main entrance now provides an inviting setting for pre- game entertainment. “The differences are amazing,” Finkelstein said. “The additional club space and the grounds around the site are at another whole level.” As he spoke, workers outside the stadium cut ply- wood, applied fresh paint and tested glass-bottom gon- dolas that will run the length of the grounds and make their debut on Super Sunday, providing fans with a view of pregame festivities from a height of 90 feet. A round trip will take 20 minutes. “That’s defi nitely a Super Bowl fi rst,” Finkelstein said with a laugh. The NFL has been on site since Jan. 2 and built 4 1/2 miles of fence to secure the perimeter. On Super Sun- day, gates will be opened to admit 65,000 fans. “We are prepared to put on an amazing show,” Fin- kelstein said. Injuries to Petrusev, Watson hurt depth of No. 2 Gonzaga By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS Associated Press SPOKANE, Wash. — Second-ranked Gonzaga is battling injuries and will be shorthanded heading into Saturday’s game against Pacifi c. Freshman Anton Watson is out for the rest of the sea- son after it was decided last week he would have shoul- der surgery. Leading scorer and rebounder Filip Petrusev had to leave last Saturday’s game against BYU early in the second half because of a high ankle sprain. It is unclear when he will return. That leaves a very thin bench for the Bulldogs. “It’s part of the game,’’ coach Mark Few said after the BYU game. “We’ve got to keep playing.’’ Petrusev, who averages 16.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, is a 6-foot-11 sophomore forward from Serbia. Watson, meanwhile, averaged nearly fi ve points and three rebounds in about 15 minutes per game. Earlier this season, the Zags lost freshman Oumar Ballo to an academic red- shirt. Freshman Brock Ravet, who was expected to contribute, left the team for personal reasons. That leaves a rotation of six players: Corey Kispert, AP Photo/Young Kwak Gonzaga forward Filip Petrusev, center, is helped off the court by team staff after suff ering an injury during the sec- ond half of an NCAA college basketball game against BYU in Spokane, Wash., on Saturday. Gonzaga won 92-69. Killian Tillie, Joel Ayayi, Admon Gilder, Ryan Wool- ridge and Drew Timme. Few typically prefers an eight-man rotation. The rest of the roster con- sists of role players who play minimal minutes. Gonzaga (20-1, 6-0 West Coast) has 10 remaining reg- ular season games. The Bulldogs lead the nation in scoring at 88.7 points per game, and every remaining player is averag- ing 9.5 points per game or better. “It’s just tough when we don’t have all the bodies that we’re used to,’’ Kispert said. ‘‘Filip will be OK ... it’s not as serious as it looked.’’ But the injuries may force some adjustments. ‘‘You’ve got to be smart on the risks you take, espe- cially on defense, because we just can’t afford to lose another guy to foul trouble or injury,’’ Kispert said. Petrusev was helped off the fl oor with 15 minutes left in the second half, but the Zags didn’t miss a beat. They scored 54 second-half points on 73.9% shooting to blow open a close game and beat BYU 92-69. It was their sixth consecutive victory over the Cougars, and made the Zags the fi rst team in the country to win 20 games this year. Despite that performance, the Zags still dropped out of the top spot in The Associ- ated Press Top 25 and are now No. 2.
