Tune in for the puck drop between these two NHL Eastern Conference powerhouses with live coverage on NBC. Following a strong 2018-19 season that saw the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup final and force the St. Louis Blues to Game 7 of the latter’s first-ever championship, the Bruins have somehow managed to turn up even stronger this season. After the first 30 games, the Bruins had lost only four times and boasted a record of 20-4-6 (compared to 16-10-4 from last year). Much of the success can be attributed to the goal-scoring prow- ess of David Pastrnak, who looks poised to make a run at the Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophy. The 23-year-old Czech winger was in contention for the award last season until he was sidelined for two weeks due to a thumb injury. Having played only 66 games, he still managed to set a new career high of 38 goals (and he had 25 goals after the first 30 games this season). Both the Bruins and Penguins have benefited from having backup goaltenders who have proven to be more than reliable. In fact, the Penguins’ Tristan Jarry has argu- ably outplayed starter Matt Murray this season, recording a better save percentage, goals-against average and shutout total. The Bruins’ Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halák have both had consistent performances with nearly identical statistics. Regardless of where the teams are positioned at the end of the season, both the Bruins and Penguins will have the upper hand entering the playoffs with rested goaltenders and will be worthy Stanley Cup contenders. The Bruins and Penguins have been two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference for the past decade, with five Stanley Cup final appearances and three championships between them.
