Vikings drop round one
of Crusader Classic
New Year’s Invitational
East Oregonian
SALEM — The Uma-
tilla boys are now on a four-
game skid after a 47-33 loss
to Dayton on the fi rst day of
the Crusader Classic New
Year’s Invitational at Salem
Academy on Thursday.
“We struggled a little bit
today,” Vikings head coach
Scott Bow said. “Dayton is
a top three team in the state.
Shooting continues to be a
struggle for us.”
Senior guard Andrew
Earl led the Vikings with a
team-high 14 points. Uma-
tilla (6-5) will compete in
day two of the Salem tour-
nament on Friday evening
against an opponent yet to
be determined.

SALEM ACADEMY
42, UMATILLA 29 —
Despite holding a lead at the
half, the Vikings dropped
game one of the Crusader
Classic New Year’s Invita-
tional in Salem on Thursday.
“We played really good
for the fi rst three quarters,”
Umatilla head coach McK-
enzie Davis said. “Free
throws and turnovers were
the two biggest things that
got us.”
Junior wing Brook-
lyn Smith led the Vikings
(2-8) with 11 points. Uma-
tilla will play its next game
at the tournament Friday
against an opponent yet to
be determined.
BANKS 53, MAC-HI
21 — The Pioneers dropped
their fi rst showing at the
Banks Winter Shootout
Tournament on Friday, fall-
ing to the competition’s host
team.
“We didn’t have any legs
under us,” Mac-Hi head
coach Chris Bryant said.
“(Banks) came out and pres-
sured us with the ball right
away. Driving 5.5 hours to
get there and hopping right
onto the court didn’t help
much. We just didn’t have
the intensity we needed to
win this game.”
Mac-Hi (6-6) will face
Cascade in round two of the
Banks tournament on Fri-
day at 3 p.m.

is 18-1 this season

Crook County, which
boasts two-time state
champion Hunter Mode
at 145 pounds and state
champ Zach Mauras at
126, recorded seven pins
and received three forfeits
on the afternoon.
“We have a pretty vet-
eran team, with a mix of
young guys,” Cowboys
coach Jake Gonzales said.
“We are doing better each
competition. Pendleton
has a tough team too.”
The Bucks, who have
been hit with injuries and
illness this season, hope
to welcome Kyle Liscom
(160) and Collin Primus
(126) back to the lineup in
the next couple of weeks.
Pendleton picked up its
fi rst win Thursday at 220
as Jacob Griffi n scored a
3-0 decision over Hayden
Hilderbrand.
Scoreless after two
rounds, Griffi n got an
escape 9 seconds into the
third round, then took
Hilderbrand down with
13 seconds remaining in
the match.
After two bouts, the
Cowboys had a 6-3 lead,
but a forfeit by Pendleton
at 113, and consecutive
wins by Crook County at
120 and 126, boosted its
lead to 30-9.
Lieuallen got the Bucks
back on the winning track
with a 39-second pin of
Conrad Parker at 132.
“They moved up their
JV kid for the match,”
Lieuallen said of his
opponent. “Their varsity
kid would have been a
much better match.”
Lieuallen, who has
competed at 138 and 132
this season, is 18-6, and
won the 132-pound title
at the Liberty Invitational
before Christmas.
“It has been all right
for my freshman year,”
said Lieuallen, who has
been wrestling since he
was 4 years old. “I have
lost to some tough upper-
classmen, and beaten
some too.”
Hancock has been
pleased with Lieuallen’s
performance.
“Jack is a solid kid, and
technically sound,” he
said. “He has been doing
a good job for us.”
Matthew Perry (138),
Mode (145), Brayden
Duke (152) and Ray Solis
(160) posted consecutive
pins for the Cowboys,
then picked up a forfeit at
170 to take a commanding
60-15 lead.
Urbina had the fi nal
match of the dual, pinning
Clayton Berman in 1:23 at
182 pounds.
“It was nice to put up a
few points for the team,”
Urbina said, looking at
the scoreboard. “They
(Cowboys) are a pretty
dominant force. I wish we
could have won at home.”
Urbina, who placed
fi fth at state last year, is
18-1 this season. He suf-
fered his lone loss to Gil-
bert Marquez of Kami-
akin at the Bob Mars
Tournament the fi rst
weekend of December.
Since then, he has won
tournament titles at The
Old Guys Tournament
in Gresham, the Liberty
Invitational, Oregon Trail
County Championships,
and the Muilenburg Tour-
nament in La Grande.
“This was just another
match for Isaac,” Han-
cock said. “He wrestles
tough and gets wins for
us.”
The Bucks are back on
the mat Jan. 11 against La
Grande at Eastern Oregon
University.
“That will be a cool
experience, and they will
get to see a college match
(EOU vs. Big Bend Com-
munity College),” Han-
cock said.

Seahawks: ‘He’s been really true to who he is’
Continued from Page A8
While he wasn’t getting car-
ries, he was at least getting
on the fi eld.
The fi rst carry of his
career didn’t come until
Week 13 against Minne-
sota when he took a fake
punt for 29 yards. He got a
couple of carries in cleanup
duty against Carolina two
weeks later after Penny was
lost for the season to a knee
injury. A week later, Homer
was suddenly Seattle’s only
healthy running back after
Carson (hip) and Prosise
(arm) suffered season-end-
ing injuries in the fi rst half
of Seattle’s loss to Arizona.
Carroll said he had to
remind Homer that day to be
a little smarter about when
to take and when to avoid
hits being he was Seattle’s
only healthy running back
remaining.
“I didn’t really like it but
AP Photo/Stephen Brashear
Seattle Seahawks running back Travis Homer (25) is brought
down by San Francisco 49ers’ Marcell Harris on a carry during
the fi rst half of an NFL football game on Sunday in Seattle.
I had to do what I had to do,”
Homer said.
There was no need for
Homer to hold back against
the 49ers after the arrival of
Lynch to add depth. Homer
fi nished with 62 yards rush-
ing on 10 carries and added
another fi ve receptions for
30 yards. He was excep-
tionally good on Seattle’s
fi nal two possessions of the
fourth quarter doing a little
of everything required of a
running back in Seattle’s
offense. He ran when given
a chance. He caught a few
passes out of the backfi eld
as a secondary option and
most importantly was solid
in pass protection helping
keep Russell Wilson clean.
“He’s been really true to
who he is, but it wasn’t a
surprise. It was good to see
him be effective,” Carroll
said.
The entire week was a
bit surreal for Homer lead-
ing into his fi rst career start.
He knew he was going to
be a big part of the game
plan, but at the same time
was also trying to help out
Lynch in his return after 14
months away from football
and four years away from
Seattle.
And as for what Lynch
said to him on the sideline?
“It was defi nitely a cool
moment for me to have one
of the greatest come up to
me and say what he said,”
Homer said.
