B2 SPORTS East Oregonian PREP ROUNDUP Tigers: ‘Basketball is a game of runs’ Continued from Page B1 Staff photo by Ben Lonergan Stanfield’s Uriel Carrillo (10) leaps for a layup during a game against the Echo Cougars in Stanfield Thursday night. Stanfield dominates Echo for nonleague home victory East Oregonian STANFIELD — The Stanfield boys basket- ball team kept the ball in their control, allowing just seven turnovers and less than 10 points per quarter as they rolled to a 73-30 nonleague home win over Echo on Thursday night. “They’re well-coached, but they’re very young,” Stanfield head coach Devin Bailey said of Echo. “I feel like we’re playing at a very high level right now. We were hoping to come in and take care of business.” Tigers junior Josue Hernandez led the way with 15 points, and junior Sam Kerns followed with 14. Seniors Mario San- chez and Rafael Orozco chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Echo got a team-high 12 points from freshman Mason Murdock and 11 from freshman Tanner Arbogast. The Cougars still remain without a win this season. “Our goal is to give up 10 or less points in each quarter,” Bailey said. “Tonight, we did that.” Stanfield (4-4) hosts Riverside on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Echo (0-7) kicks off their home Bouncin’ Cancer Tournament on Friday, Dec. 27, with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Wallowa. Boys hoops MYRTLE POINT 60, HEPPNER 55 — The Mustangs never trailed by more than six more points per quarter, but ultimately could not keep pace with the visiting Bobcats in non- league play on Thursday. Jayden Wilson scored a team-best 17 points to lead Heppner, including a 7-for-9 performance at the line. Mason Lehman fol- lowed with 10 points. Heppner (3-3) will com- pete at the 2A Preview Tournament at the Pendle- ton Convention Center this weekend, starting with a game against Illinois Val- ley on Friday at 4:45 p.m. Myrtle Point will play Pilot Rock later in the evening at 8 p.m. Girls hoops HEPPNER 61, MYR- TLE POINT 22 — The Mustangs are now enjoy- ing a three-game win streak after Thursday’s nonleague home blowout over the Bobcats. Sydney Wilson poured in a game-high 27 points to lead the way to the win. “We controlled the tempo of the game,” Hep- pner head coach Robert Wilson said. “This was probably our best game of the season so far, as far as having everyone work together and be on the same page. We got to do a lot of what we’ve been working on in practice. It was good to see positive results from that.” Heppner (5-1) kicks off their run at the 2A Preview Tournament at the Pend- leton Convention Cen- ter with a 3 p.m. contest on Friday against Illinois Valley. OSAA: The Pioneers are anticipating 3A play Continued from Page B1 is 18.18%, and 12.5% for Irrigon. If approved, Uma- tilla and Irrigon would join the 2A Special Dis- trict 5 (Blue Mountain Conference) with Grant Union, Heppner, Riv- erside, Stanfield and Weston-McEwen. “That 2A league is a really strong league,” Royer said. “We played Weston-McEwen, Stan- field and Heppner in non- league, and it was a strug- gle. Overall, we are better suited for that league. We didn’t have enough guys for a JV team this year.” Also potentially join- ing the 2A group are Adrian/Jordan Valley, which won the 1A state title in November, and Pilot Rock/Nixyaaawii. “We aren’t getting too excited yet,” said Pilot Rock AD TJ Presley, who Friday, December 20, 2019 would like his team to stay at the 8-man level. “There are a couple of more meet- ings. It will be a big jump for us for to go to 11-man. Even where we are at, we didn’t have enough for a JV team. Our enrollment numbers are up, but not our participation num- bers. When you co-opt, your enrollment goes up — not just the football guys, but everyone in their school.” Pendleton will stay at 5A, but will have different teams in Special District 1 — Forest Grove, Hills- boro, Hood River Valley, Parkrose, Scappoose, St. Helens and The Dalles. “That makes sense,” Pendleton coach Erik Davis said. “We play everybody once and pick up a couple of nonleague games, and eliminate the crossover game. They (OSAA) will do what’s best for everyone.” weren’t going in. We weren’t playing as a team.” Echo came to life in the third quarter as sophomore Faith McCarty scored a basket and a trey to spark a 10-point run that pulled the Cougars within six points at 29-23. Tejeda broke the streak with a 3-pointer at 3:06, and knocked down two more shots in the final two minutes to broaden their lead to 14 points at 39-25. Tejeda would be responsi- ble for seven of Stanfield’s nine points for the quarter. “Echo plays hard,” coach Sharp said. “They cut that deficit down. Basketball is a game of runs. I’m proud of how our girls responded.” Hart and Tigers sopho- more Alexis Shelby com- bined for seven points early in the fourth quarter for a 21-point, 46-25 lead. Stan- field took an even greater advantage as Shelby, Gre- gerson, and freshman Mag- gie Sharp teamed up for five more points before Echo got back on the board. Tejeda hit two back-to- back shots with 3:50 left to play as the Tigers took a 58-27 advantage. They maintained a lead greater than 30 points off of baskets from McClure and fresh- man Zuri Reeser in the final three minutes. “We picked it up in the second half,” said Tejeda, who finished with a team- high 17 points. “We were mentally prepared. Once our shots started falling in, so did everything else.” Hart had 15 points to fol- low Tejeda in Stanfield’s home victory over the Cou- gars. Echo got 17 points from Faith McCarty, and 10 points from Rachel McCa- rty. They were the only two Cougars to score in double digits. The Tigers (7-1) travel to Riverside on Friday for a 6 p.m. nonleague tip-off. Echo (3-3) hosts Wash- ington’s Lyle/Wishram at 5 p.m. on Friday. Staff photo by Ben Lonergan Stanfield’s Kendra Hart (3) takes a shot during the third peri- od. The Stanfield Tigers defeated the Echo Cougars 63-32 in Stanfield Thursday night. Wrestling: Bulldogs to compete in Tri-State tournament Continued from Page B1 Hermiston’s Emmanuel Carrillo (152) found him- self on the wrong side of a 7-3 score early in the third round. Carrillo then registered three takedowns, and gave up two escapes to tie the match at 11-11. In overtime, Carrillo got a quick takedown for the 13-11 win. Carrillo also pinned Richland’s Eli Lemieux in 5:25 to open the match against the Bombers. “We talk about being in better shape,” Larson said. “You have to be the guy with more energy in the end.” The Bulldogs will com- pete at the Tri-State tour- nament in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on Friday and Saturday. Staff photo by Annie Fowler Hermiston’s Trevor Wagner, left, pins Kennewick’s Andrew Hawkins during their 170-pound match Thursday at Richland High School. Wagner pinned Hawkins in 1:21, and the Bulldogs won the match 44-15.
