A10 SPORTS East Oregonian Wednesday, December 18, 2019 Ravens, Saints, Seahawks are top 3 in AP Pro32 poll By SIMMI BUTTAR AP Pro Football Writer NEW YORK — Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens have scored a per- fect 10. Led by their star quarter- back, the Ravens extended their winning streak to 10 games and wrapped up the AFC North with a rout of the New York Jets last week. With another win, the Ravens will clinch a fi rst- round bye and home-fi eld advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. And the NFL’s top team is once again the unanimous choice as the top team in the latest AP Pro32 poll. For the third consecutive week, the Ravens earned all 12 fi rst- place votes for 384 points in balloting Tuesday by media members who regularly cover the NFL. “No stopping Lamar Jackson,” Fox Sports’ John Czarnecki said. The New Orleans Saints moved up one spot to No. 2 after their dominating 34-7 win over the India- napolis Colts on Monday night. Drew Brees became the NFL’s all-time leader in touchdown passes, throw- AP Photo/Gail Burton, File Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (8) scrambles for yardage against the New York Jets during the fi rst half of an NFL football game on Dec. 12, 2019, in Baltimore. ing for four scores. He completed 29 of 30 passes — 96.7 percent — for 307 yards before being relieved by Teddy Bridgewater in the fourth quarter. “Drew Brees breaks Peyton Manning’s career touchdowns record with yet another dominant per- formance,” said Newsday’s Bob Glauber. “Ten years after the Saints’ Super Bowl run, Brees looks ready to do it again.” The Seattle Seahawks also moved up one place to No. 3 after topping Caro- lina. And the San Francisco 49ers slipped two spots to No. 4 after their 29-22 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The NFC West rivals are tied at 11-3. The 49ers host the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night and the Seahawks host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Seahawks host the 49ers in Week 17 to close out the reg- ular season. “The Seahawks rebounded nicely after being drubbed by the Rams, but the real test comes in the season fi nale against the 49ers,” said Ira Kaufman of Fox 13 in Tampa, Florida. And the Kansas City Chiefs slipped a spot to No. 5 despite their 23-3 rout of the Denver Broncos at snowy Arrowhead Stadium. The next four teams in the poll all kept their places from last week after wins: the Green Bay Packers at 6, the New England Patriots at 7, the Minnesota Vikings at 8, and the Buffalo Bills at 9. The Bills head to Fox- borough, Massachusetts, on Saturday to face the Patri- ots, who are trying to clinch the AFC East title for the 11th consecutive year. And the Packers head to Minnesota for the fi nal Monday night game of the season and can wrap up the NFC North with a win. The Houston Texans moved up one spot to round out the top 10 after edging the Tennessee Titans 24-21. The Texans open Week 16 as they head to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon. A win would give them their fourth division title in six years. Kansas faces test of holding onto No. 1 spot in AP Top 25 By AARON BEARD AP Basketball Writer RALEIGH, N.C. — Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke and Louisville have each spent time at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll only to lose quickly. The challenge now falls on Kansas to avoid the same fate. The Jayhawks reached No. 1 in Monday’s poll, mark- ing the fi rst time the AP poll has had fi ve different No. 1s before New Year’s Day. They play once this week with their new ranking, visiting No. 18 Villanova on Saturday. None of the previous four teams to hold the No. 1 rank- ing this season have won more than twice before stum- bling, illustrating that this is a year with no dominant team in college basketball. Kansas (9-1), which earned 47 of 65 fi rst-place votes, hasn’t lost since fall- ing to Duke in the Champi- ons Classic to open the sea- son. That run has included winning the Maui Invita- tional and beating a then- ranked Colorado team, with all but the overtime win against Dayton for the Maui title coming by double-digit margins. “We’ve done what we’re supposed to do,” Kansas coach Bill Self said last week of potentially rising to No. 1. “We’ve played pretty well since the Duke game.” The Jayhawks commit- ted 28 turnovers in that game but have done a better job taking care of the basketball since; they had 21 turnovers against the Buffaloes but have had 15 or fewer in every other game. They entered the week alongside No. 3 Louis- ville and No. 5 Ohio State as the only teams in the top 12 of KenPom’s adjusted offen- sive and defensive effi ciency rankings. After Saturday’s win against UMKC, Self said the team would have to work around exam schedules as it prepared for Villanova. “We are going to give Vil- lanova three intense days of practice even though they will be an hour-and-a-half long, probably each one of them, not long, because of fi nals,” Self said. The Jayhawks will fi nd out if that’s enough to pass their fi rst test at No. 1. The big matchup Fifth-ranked Ohio State and sixth-ranked Kentucky have the week’s headlining matchup in Saturday’s CBS Sports Classic in Las Vegas. For the Buckeyes, it will be a chance to add to an already impressive nonconference resume that could position them for a top NCAA Tour- nament seed come Selection Sunday. Ohio State (9-1) already has 25-point wins against both Villanova and then- ranked North Carolina. Chris Holtmann’s team lost at Min- nesota in Big Ten play Sunday but returns to action Tuesday against Southeast Missouri State at home before playing John Calipari’s Wildcats. Kentucky (8-1) is playing a doubleheader this week in Las Vegas, fi rst against Utah on Wednesday. Been a while No. 23 Penn State (9-2) is in the AP poll for the fi rst time since the fi nal poll of the 1995-96 season. The Nittany Lions play their fi rst game with that ranking Friday against Central Connecticut State. Ranked to unranked No. 2 Gonzaga, No. 7 Maryland and No. 13 Dayton all have matchups with for- merly ranked teams. The Bulldogs (11-1), who claimed 15 fi rst-place votes to jump four spots in the lat- est poll, host North Caro- lina on Wednesday night. It comes with the Tar Heels (6-4) sliding from No. 5 in November to unranked for the fi rst time since Febru- ary 2014 while facing ques- tions about the health of star freshman point guard Cole Anthony along with fellow starter Leaky Black. The Terrapins (10-1) on Thursday visit Seton Hall, which was ranked 12th in the preseason but fell out of the poll after losses to Iowa State and Rutgers. The Pirates are banged up, too, with presea- son AP All-American Myles Powell leaving the Rut- gers loss with a concussion a game after starter Sandro Mamukelashvili went down with a broken wrist at Iowa State. The Flyers (8-1) face a Colorado team that spent fi ve weeks in the poll before exit- ing Monday.
