An emergency dis- patcher, Van Beek was on the other end of the line when “Mrs. H” called 911 on Sept. 28 while staying at the Pendleton Red Lion. With her husband in the midst of a medical emergency, she was calmed by the profes- sionalism and compassion exhibited by Van Beek. MCSO employee fi nishes safety academy course East Oregonian SALEM — Daniel Thomas of the Morrow County Sheriff’s Offi ce recently completed Basic Police #BP393. The 16-week course included dozens of training areas, including emergency vehicle operations, cultural diversity, problem solving, community policing, elder abuse and drug recognition. Thomas and classmates in Basic Police Class 393 graduated Dec. 6 at the Oregon Public Safety Academy in Salem. Chief Rhonda Groshong of the Beaverton Police Depart- ment served as the guest speaker. The course was pre- sented by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. Athena restoration project cashes in with grants East Oregonian ATHENA — The Ath- ena Mainstreet Associa- tion received a recent boost from the F.J. Hodecker Family Fund, Carl J. and Alma Johnson Fund and Betty Lou Roberts Fund of the Oregon Commu- nity Foundation. The $30,000 grant will be used to help with the restoration of the Historic Stahl Building into a com- munity center. The funds are earmarked for the installation of two Ameri- cans with Disabilities Act accessible restrooms. A nonprofi t organiza- tion, the Athena Mainstreet Association was founded in 2013. Its mission is to revitalize Athena’s down- town area, said president April Vorhauer-Flatt. Efforts are focused on beautifying Main Street, encouraging economic vitality and providing ways for the community to build relationships. Hermiston’s River Point Farms plowed through the effort during the month of October — Breast Cancer Awareness Month — rais- ing $16,000, which included gener- ous donations from employees, said St. Anthony employee Emily Smith. The Cancer Fund at the Pendleton hospital is used to support the Can- cer Clinic and includes direct patient assistance and program support for patients with various cancers. The Oregon Association of Nurseries applauded the legislator’s efforts in securing federal funding for the money-sav- ing Smart Sprayer, which reduces the need for chem- icals in production. The Wilsonville-based association represents more than 700 wholesale grow- ers, retailers, landscapers and suppli- ers. It’s the second time Merkley has been recog- nized by the group.
