NATION/WORLD Tuesday, December 3, 2019 BRIEFLY Amnesty says at least 208 killed in Iran protests DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Amnesty International says it believes that at least 208 people have been killed in Iran in protests over gov- ernment-set gasoline price hikes and the security crackdown that followed. Iran has yet to release any nationwide fi gures over the unrest that gripped the Islamic Republic in mid-November, though it has disputed Amnesty’s earlier fi gures. A statement from Amnesty on Monday says there have been “dozens of deaths” in Shahriar, a sub- urb of the capital, Tehran. It offered no breakdown for the deaths elsewhere across the country. Authorities say as many as 200,000 people demon- strated, with some attack- ing hundreds of banks, police outposts and gas sta- tions in the country. The protests stretched across 100 cities and towns in Iran. Iran shut down internet access to the outside world amid the unrest. Death toll now 22 in Mexican border region battle VILLA UNION, Mex- ico — A Mexican border governor says the death toll from a weekend battle between drug cartel mem- bers and security forces has risen to 22. Coahuila Gov. Miguel Riquelme says two addi- tional gunmen died over- night. He did not say whether they had died of injuries from Saturday’s gun battle or in subsequent operations. Police and sol- diers have been sweep- ing the area around Villa Union for those involved. Riquelme told Radio Formula Monday that all hostages have been rescued. The governor identifi ed those responsible as mem- bers of the Nuevo Lar- edo-based Cartel of the Northeast gang. Many of the vehicles they arrived in Saturday were emblazoned with the cartel’s initials, as were their bulletproof vests. Riquelme says the dead included 16 alleged gun- men, four state police and two civilians. Hunter says he will plead guilty to corruption charges SAN DIEGO — U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter plans to plead guilty on Tuesday to the misuse of campaign funds and has indicated he will leave Congress. The California Repub- lican is facing federal cor- ruption charges he looted campaign cash to fi nance vacations, golf outings and other personal expenses. He told KUSI television in San Diego in an inter- view that aired Monday that he is changing his plea to protect his three children from going through a very public trial. “I think it would be really tough for them,” he said. “It’s hard enough being the kids of a public fi gure. I think it’s time for them to live life outside the spotlight.” Hunter said he will accept whatever sentence the judge gives. He said he wants his seat to remain in Republi- can hands and he will try to ensure a smooth transition, indicating he will be leav- ing Congress. Hunter has served 11 years in Congress. He was re-elected last year after being indicted on fed- eral corruption charges in the misuse of more than $250,000 in campaign funds. — Associated Press East Oregonian A7 Patriotism is the theme of Christmas at the White House By DARLENE SUPERVILLE Associated Press WASHINGTON — Melania Trump is celebrat- ing American patriotism at the White House this Christ- mas, incorporating red and blue into the traditional hol- iday green, adding a time- line of American design, innovation and architec- ture and studding a Christ- mas tree with her family’s annual ornament, the Amer- ican fl ag. Journalists were also admitted to the grounds of the Naval Observatory, the offi cial residence for Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen, to see the Christmas decorations there.
