B4 SPORTS East Oregonian Saturday, November 23, 2019 Deontay Wilder rolls the dice in Las Vegas fi ght with Ortiz By TIM DAHLBERG AP Boxing Writer LAS VEGAS — Deon- tay Wilder is rolling the dice in a city where a good gam- ble can quickly go bad. Beat Luis Ortiz on Satur- day and a lucrative rematch with Tyson Fury in Febru- ary can’t come soon enough. Walk into the wrong end of a big right hand, though, and any plans to dominate the heavyweight division will have to be drastically revised. It almost happened when the two fi rst met last year. The way Ortiz hits, there’s no guarantee it won’t happen now. Unfortunately for boxing fans, they’ll have to buy the pay-per-view to fi nd out in real time. “He is one of the most dan- gerous fi ghters in the divi- sion, period,’’ Wilder said. “That’s why so many guys don’t want to fi ght him.’’ Wilder is a 7-1 favorite to beat the 40-year-old Cuban and retain the piece of the heavyweight title in the fi ght at the MGM Grand Garden arena. It will be the 10th title defense for the erratic but big-punching Wilder, who is counting on a win to keep his scheduled Feb. 23 date against Fury. “Where I’ve got to go is through Ortiz and straight to Fury,’’ Wilder said. “My AP Photo/Steve Marcus WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, left, poses with Luis Ortiz during a fi nal news conference at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Wednesday. schedule is packed with a lot of fun in the heavyweight division. Fights people want to see.’’ Wilder (41-0-1, 40 knock- outs) puts his unbeaten record on the line in a heavyweight bout that is the fi rst of three planned fi ghts in upcoming months that will say a lot about the state of the heavy- weight division. Two weeks later, Anthony Joshua tries to regain his title from Anthony Ruiz Jr. in Saudi Arabia, and, assuming Wilder wins against Ortiz, he will face the former cham- pion Fury in February. “The heavyweight divi- sion is strong and back and Deontay Wilder is defi nitely the one bringing the excite- ment to it,’’ Wilder said. Just why Wilder is fi ght- ing Ortiz again instead of a less risky bout is mainly about the money. The fi ght will be on Fox pay-per-view (suggested price $74.99), giv- ing Wilder a chance to make far more than the $2.1 mil- lion he got to stop Ortiz in the 10th round of their fi rst fi ght in March 2018. Ortiz will get a nice pay- day, too, and a chance to fi n- ish off what he couldn’t in the fi rst fi ght when he had Wilder out on his feet in the seventh round but couldn’t put him away. “I was going to fi nish him and the fi ght was over basi- cally,’’ Ortiz said. “I hav- en’t had any other situation like that where I hadn’t got- ten a knockout in a scenario like that. So it’s just a mat- ter of putting some punches together and winning this fi ght.’’ That Ortiz has the power to stop any heavyweight is not in dispute. The loss to Wilder is the only blemish on a 31-1 record with 26 knock- outs in a career that began in 2010 after he left Cuba to make his fortune in profes- sional boxing. But he’s stocky and rela- tively slow and doesn’t have a signature win on his record. And though Ortiz claims to be 40, there are some in box- ing who believe he may be older than he says. Still, he has three straight wins since suffering his only loss and is determined to make good in what might be his last real chance at a heavyweight title. “You absolutely never know what Wilder is going to do as far as how he approaches his fi ghts,’’ Ortiz said. “But one thing for sure is that both mentally and physically I’m at my best and prepared. So he can bring whatever he is going to bring.’’ 16-year-old middleweight trains with eyes on 2024 Olympics By ZACK PLAIR The Dispatch COLUMBUS, Miss. — Dancing around on the mat softening the concrete gym fl oor, Zion Reed awaits his instructions. “One-two,” barks his grandfather and trainer, who is moving in front of Reed wearing punching mitts. Reed peppers the mitts with a quick left jab and a hard right. “Eight times,” responds the trainer, eliciting a fury of hard punches into the mitts while music plays in the background to help Reed keep his rhythm. It’s a typical Thursday evening for the 16-year-old New Hope High School stu- dent working out with Oliver Miller at his boxing gym on College Street — at least typ- ical of the last six months or so. Not so long ago, Reed was a 220-pound linebacker for the New Hope football team. Now, he’s a 160-pound mid- dleweight with a 1-0 offi cial record in the USA Boxing amateur ranks. For most of his life, he’s spent occasional days goof- ing off in his grandfather’s gym watching his uncle, Shannon Miller, pursue a fi ghting career. Shannon died in 2018 of a heart attack at age 42, and now Reed is trying to honor his uncle’s memory with a successful career of his own. “I’ve just started getting serious over the last four or fi ve months,” Reed said. “I just remember seeing my uncle struggle and work so hard at it. ... Since he died, I’m to the point where I want to dedicate all my time to this.” So far, so good, accord- ing to his grandfather, a one-time Mississippi Gold Gloves winner whose more than 40 years as either a boxer or trainer helps him accurately spot talent when he sees it. “He’s training con- stantly,” Oliver said. “He’s an overachiever. He’s the kind of fi ghter that if you forget a drill, he asks, ‘Why didn’t we do this drill or that drill?’ A lot of times, I have to stop him from training. “That’s what you want though,” he added. “You’ve got to be in shape in this because somebody’s always out there waiting on you.” At Reed’s football playing weight, he would have had to fi ght in the heavyweight divi- sion, something his 5-foot-9 frame would have strug- gled with against opponents over 6-feet who had several inches of reach advantage, as well. By trimming to 160 pounds — something Reed did in less than three months — he can use his strength and speed to pound middle- weight fi ghters of more equi- table dimensions. His only sanctioned win came in Louisiana earlier this year. But in training bouts against other middle- weights, most recently a win in a three-round fi ght in late October at Trotter Conven- tion Center, Reed seems to be growing into his potential. “I came out energized, got my jab going and just got a feel for (the opponent) at fi rst,” Reed recalled of his October practice fi ght. “Then he hit me, and every- thing changed.” EASTERN OREGON marketplace Place classified ads online at www.easternoregonmarketplace.com or call 1-800-962-2819 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
