Pendleton boys, girls soccer claim IMC honors, break school records
Jaime Rico-Mendoza scored a
team-high 13 goals this season

PENDLETON — To
end their second year in the
5A Intermountain Confer-
ence, the Pendleton boys
soccer team placed four in
the league’s all-star selec-
tions, and broke some school
records along the way.
Senior
goalkeeper
Andrew
Wolotira
was
selected as a fi rst-team goalie.
Wolotira allowed 22 goals on
the season, breaking the pre-
vious record of 27 that was
set in 2010.
“I would
credit a lot
of our suc-
cess
to
him,” Pend-
leton head
coach Alex
Little Sky
Erazo said
of Wolotira.
“He was huge in the leader-
ship department. He brings
that level of experience and
knowledge that other guys
R. Lovercheck
K. Lovercheck
don’t have. He’s a beast of a
keeper.”
Senior defender Michael
Rodriguez was Pendle-
ton’s second and fi nal
fi rst-team selection.
“He may not have scored
the most goals, but he defi -
nitely was a huge part of our
offense,” Erazo said. “We
wouldn’t have scored as many
goals without him in the mid-
dle. He got the ball going for-
ward and kept it going for us.
Defensively, he helped keep
our midfi elders in check.”
Junior midfi elder Juan
Ortega was Pendleton’s lone
second-team selection. Ortega
broke the school record for
most assists in a season, post-
ing seven by the year’s end.
“It was great coaching
him,” Erazo said. “He’s a
great, well-rounded player.
The stats show his ability to
contribute to the team’s scor-
ing and putting others in suc-
cessful positions. He was

Gasol waived by Blazers but may have new role with team
By ANNE M. PETERSON
Associated Press
PORTLAND — The Portland
Trail Blazers have waived center
Pau Gasol but his career with the
team may not be over.
Gasol, who never played in a
game with the Blazers, announced
on social media Wednesday that
the team had released him. In a
video he posted, Gasol said he is
still recovering from surgery on
his left foot in May.
“I underwent surgery in hopes
that it would expedite my return,
but unfortunately in the last few
days we have assessed that my
recovery is going to take longer
than we had originally hoped for,”
he said.
Gasol said he plans to remain
in Portland to continue his reha-
bilitation, and he is discussing a
new role with the Trail Blazers.
“I have the same excitement
and passion for the game of basket-
ball that I had when I fi rst started
playing, and I will work as hard as
I can on my recovery with a clear
goal in mind: To get healthy in
order to continue to play the game
that I love,” Gasol said.
Gasol signed with the Blazers
in the offseason as a free agent.
He played in three games for
the Milwaukee Bucks last sea-
son before undergoing surgery
for the stress fracture. The Bucks
had signed him in March after he
reached a buyout agreement with
the San Antonio Spurs. In total,
he played in just 30 games last
season, averaging 3.8 points and
4.6 rebounds.
