A star is born: Pulisic leads Chelsea into Manchester City clash

helsea entered the 2019-20 Premier
League season with one of the youngest
squads in the league, led by newly appointed
manager Frank Lampard. They take on the
experienced Manchester City, led by Pep
Guardiola, on Saturday, Nov. 23, with live
coverage on NBC.
Just a matter of weeks ago, Christian
Pulisic wasn’t even a consideration in Lam-
pard’s starting 11. After starting three of the
first four matches of the season, Pulisic found
himself on the bench, making only brief ap-
pearances toward the end of the matches
— he was even snubbed from the lineup in
Chelsea’s Champions League win over Lille.

Despite the American star’s price tag of $73
million, Lampard has refused to give him any
special treatment and has forced Pulisic to
earn every minute he gets on the pitch.
Only a handful of American players have
found success in England’s top flight, all
of whom had renowned work rates. Brian
McBride and Clint Dempsey became fan
favorites at Fulham, Tim Howard was Ever-
ton’s starting goalkeeper for 10 seasons and
DeAndre Yedlin has been able to maintain
his role as the starting right-back for the past
three seasons with Newcastle United. Pulisic
understands the effort needed to succeed
in the Premier League, and the 21-year-old
vows to put in the work. He said, “[Lampard]
likes players who work very hard and show a
lot in training, and I just have to continue to

do that, do my best in training and try to earn
my position.”
In his fourth Premier League start, Pulisic
was able to prove his quality after netting a
“perfect” hat trick in Chelsea’s 4-2 victory
over Burnley on Oct. 26. He became only
the second American to record a hat trick
(after Dempsey, who scored three goals in
Fulham’s 5-2 victory over Newcastle United
in 2012). If Pulisic can maintain the form at
which he is currently playing, it won’t be long
until he is confidently Eden Hazard’s succes-
sor at Chelsea.
Pulisic will have the opportunity to put his
skill on display when Chelsea faces Premier
League champion Manchester City on Sat-
