B2 SPORTS East Oregonian WORLD SERIES Greinke, Astros’ bullpen baffl e Nats batters in clutch By RONALD BLUM AP Baseball Writer WASHINGTON — On a night of pitching danger- ously, Zack Greinke and the Houston Astros’ bullpen kept escaping. They baffl ed batters when it mattered most, shutting down an October offense of uncanny timeliness. Washington threatened in each of the fi rst six innings but went 0 for 10 with run- ners in scoring position and stranded 12 in a 4-1 loss to Houston on Friday night. The Astros clawed back to 2-1 in the World Series after losing the fi rst two games at home. Houston pitchers had just one 1-2-3 inning, by Will Harris in the seventh, just the fourth time the Astros retired the side in order in the Series. Unsustainable in the long run, but on this night good enough. Greinke, pitching four days after his 36th birthday, was acquired by the Astros at the July 31 trade deadline to shore up the rotation but had struggled in the post- season, going 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA in three starts. He lost Game 3 of the AL Division Series to Tampa Bay and the AL Championship Series opener to the Yankees, then handed a lead to the bullpen WORLD SERIES Houston Washington 4 1 (1-2) (2-1) in Houston’s Game 4 victory over New York. He displayed his broad repertoire against the Nationals, mixing four-seam fastballs (39) and two-seam- ers (six) with curveballs (18), changeups (18) and sliders (14) to keep batters off-bal- ance. His fastest pitch was 93 mph, and his slowest 67. Washington had a .314 average with runners in scoring position in its fi rst 12 postseason games, 68 points higher than any of the other nine postseason teams. “Tonight we were a lit- tle bit aggressive outside the strike zone,” manager Dave Martinez said. “We took balls I thought we should hit, uncharacteristic of what we’ve been doing.” In the capital’s fi rst World Series game since 1933, the Nationals got the crowd excited right away. Anthony Rendon hit a two-out double in the fi rst, but Juan Soto, playing on his 21st birthday, struck out on a 72 mph curve. Saturday, October 26, 2019 BMCC: Women’s soccer falls 2-0 to Yaks Continued from Page B1 aces to put Big Bend out front early in the fi rst set, and the team eventually took a 10-4 advantage. The Timber- wolves cut that to just two points at 15-13, but failed to keep their ensuing returns in bounds, keeping the Vikings ahead. Vikings sophomore out- side hitter Payson Griner notched two unanswered points for a 22-14 advan- tage, and although Moul- ton and sophomore Keeley Morrison both put points on the board before the set was up, they could not manage a comeback. “Big Bend is always a good program,” Blue Mountain coach Ceanna Larson said. “You know you’re going to have to fi ght for those points against them.” The Vikings held a short lived 3-0 lead in the open- ing minutes of the next set, but Blue Mountain strung together a rally that quickly put them up 11-6. The Vikings pulled within a single point at 14-13, but Moulton hit a kill that kept the Timberwolves going. Blue Mountain took a six-point lead after Griner’s return fell out of bounds, and Morrison got the match point to secure Blue Mountain’s lone victory of the night. Sophomore setter Abigail Ives scored a point that helped Blue Mountain tie the score at 8-8 in set three, and the Tim- berwolves would come within two points of taking over the lead three times, but unforced errors got the best of them, handing the Vikings another set. “We started to struggle there in the end with our serve receives,” Larson said. The Vikings took another 3-0 lead in the fi nal set, and although Moulton got her night’s lone solo block to pull Blue Mountain within three points at 13-10, the Vikings offense swept the remainder of the match, allowing the Timberwolves just six more points. Moulton and Morrison each had a team-high six kills for Blue Mountain (7-19, 2-9 NWAC), and sophomore Emily Beebe had fi ve. Beebe also served two aces. Sopho- more libero Maisie Hancock posted 36 digs, while Moulton had 23, and Beebe 20. “We have a really strong group of girls,” Larson said. “They’re scrappy players. They’re all really hard work- ers. They love the game, and that showed tonight.” The fi fth-ranked Timber- wolves host Columbia Basin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Women’s soccer Blue Mountain got shots on goal from Alex Anteau, Milly Suarez, and Tinacia Chris- tensen, but could not connect with the net as Yakima Valley handed them a 2-0 home loss on Friday afternoon. The Yaks put up one goal per half to stay in control of the game. “It was a close one,” Tim- berwolves coach Jordan Hill- mick said. “We’re working through lots of injuries right now. It happens in soccer. The girls are positive about this season, which is good. They’re keeping their heads up. The progress they’ve made since the beginning of the sea- son is night and day. I couldn’t be more proud of them.” Blue Mountain (1-12-1, 0-11-1 NWAC) hits the road to Treasure Valley to fi nish off its season on Wednesday.
