AP Pro Football Writer easT ruTHerFOrd, N.J. — Tom brady set the tone and the New england Patriots’ blitz-happy defense took over from there. bill belichick’s bunch is still undefeated after another absolutely dominant performance. brady threw a Td pass to Phillip dorsett, sony Michel ran for three scores and New england forced sam dar- nold into five turnovers while cruising to a 33-0 victory over the New york Jets on Monday night. “We were able to make some plays early in the game,” belichick said, “and play pretty solid for 60 minutes.” The Patriots improved to 7-0 for the third time in franchise history, and first since 2015. They also swept the two-game season series against their aFc east rivals for the fourth straight year, outscoring the Jets (1-5) 63-14 in the two meetings this year. and, the top-ranked Patri- ots defense was a big reason in this one. darnold was the aFc offensive player of the week after leading New york to a 24-22 win over dallas last sunday in his return from missing three games with mononucleosis. They watched New england take total control from the beginning. Michel’s 3-yard touch- down run capped an efficient drive by brady to open the game. The Patriots went 16 plays and 78 yards while eat- ing up 8:47, and converted four third downs along the way. The last came on third- and-2 when brady pitched it to Michel, who easily zipped into the end zone. The cougars, who are second in the league standings, fell 25-22, 26-24, 25-20 to mark their second conference loss. “We were out of position a lot,” echo coach Janice scott said, “and it caught up with us.” The cougars got 12 assists and 14 digs from Faith Mccarty, who also went 12-for-13 at the service line. Tylene skillman put down 12 kills, 10 blocks, and two aces, and went 10-for-12 at the line. Natalie Toombs recorded 18 digs. The rangers, third in the bsL standings, proved a bit too much to handle for the cougars this time around in a rematch that followed Echo’s five-set win over Dufur ear- lier in the season. “They were ready for us,” scott said. “They played a lot of in-sys- tem volleyball, which kept us out of system.” Echo (16-7, 9-2 BSL) finishes the regular season Tuesday with a home match against condon. The Pirates (8-3, 7-0 eOL) scored three goals in the first half, and doubled that in the second to roll through visiting umatilla (5-4-1, 4-2 eOL) 9-2 and stay undefeated in eastern Oregon League play. “We started off slow,” said Pirates senior forward Johan Pena, who chipped in two goals. “The wind was against us. We really couldn’t con- trol the ball. We were a bit nervous.” riverside senior keeper Jose Torres knocked down five saves before the Pirates took control in the 16th min- ute when Pena assisted junior adair rodriguez in the match’s first goal. “The weather sucked,” riv- erside head coach Jose due- nas said, “but the team worked really hard for every goal they got today.” Vikings junior midfielder carlos Mejia responded 5 min- utes later, sinking a goal into the lower right corner of riv- erside’s net to knot the score. “I felt like we had a good chance in the first half,” Mejia said, “but after conceding some goals, it fell apart.” The Pirates scored two more goals before the final 10 minutes, including ulyses Lopez’s goal that ended scor- ing at 11:19. “umatilla is a talented team. They’re tough,” Pena said. “We needed to get on the same page with each other. We needed to be confident with the ball.” riverside’s Gerardo Lopez had a shot on goal to open the second half, but umatilla keeper roberto Lugo got the save to keep the game close for just a few seconds more. Pena got his match’s first goal in the 42nd minute to push the score to 4-1, and rodriguez and senior ezequiel ramos got a goal each within the next 10 minutes. at 23:31, senior christian rea sunk a penalty kick for a 7-1 match. “We’re steering away from that idea that only forwards get to score,” duenas said. “I kept rotating positions, and they all adapted well. It’s all about the team effort.” Mejia got the Vikings going again with his second goal with 15:28 left to play. Pena responded in the 76th minute with another score, and Lopez wrapped up the match connecting with the net for one final goal with 55 sec- onds remaining. “everything we did in practice, we put on the field,” Pena said. “everything started clicking.” The eOL’s top-ranked Pirates will play at Four riv- ers on Thursday. The Vikings, whose loss saturday halted a four-match win streak, will host Irrigon at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Williamson had his torn right lateral meniscus repaired Monday. The club says his recovery will last six to eight weeks. The 6-foot-6, 285-pound former duke star averaged 23.2 points in four preseason games. He missed New Orleans’ final exhibition game in New york last Friday night. The 19-year-old William- son turned pro after one season in college, during which he aver- aged 22.6 points and was voted to the atlantic coast conference’s all-defensive Team. He also aver- aged 8.9 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.8 blocked shots. He was projected to start immediately at forward for New Orleans, alongside guards Lonzo ball and Jrue Holiday, forward brandon Ingram and center der- rick Favors. While it remains to be seen how coach alvin Gentry will change his rotation in Williamson’s absence, it appears 6-foot-9, 235-pound for- ward Nicolo Melli of Italy could be in line for more playing time.
