NATION/WORLD Tuesday, August 27, 2019 BRIEFLY States sue over child immigrant protections SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Nineteen states are suing over the Trump administration’s effort to alter a federal agreement that limits how long immi- grant children can be kept in detention. California Attor- ney General Xavier Bec- erra said Monday the rule change puts children at risk. He’s leading the law- suit alongside Massachu- setts Attorney General Maura Healey. A decades-old agree- ment known as the Flores settlement says immigrant children must be kept in the least restrictive setting and generally shouldn’t spend more than 20 days in deten- tion. The Trump admin- istration says it plans its own set of regulations that would allow longer deten- tion of immigrant families. A judge must OK the proposed changes in order to end the Flores agreement. California also seeks to halt a Trump admin- istration proposal that could deny green cards to immigrants using public benefits. East Oregonian Trump on U.S.-China trade: ‘Sorry, it’s the way I negotiate’ By ZEKE MILLER AND DARLENE SUPERVILLE Associated Press BIARRITZ, France — Brushing off concerns about global economic instability, President Donald Trump defended the way he is trying to squeeze a trade deal out of China on Mon- day, saying it’s a style that worked for him as a businessman. Trump was challenged on a negotiating style in which he praises Chinese President Xi Jinping one day and castigates him the next. Allies are com- plaining that that’s con- tributing to instability problems for them and other nations, a reporter noted at a news confer- ence closing out Trump’s participation in the Group of Seven summit. “Sorry, it’s the way I negotiate,” he said. The president said lay- ers of U.S. tariffs have hurt China so badly that it will have no choice but to make a trade deal with the United States. His trade war has been blamed for a global eco- nomic slowdown and has sown fears of an eco- nomic recession in the U.S. Some of the lead- ers meeting in the pic- turesque French seaside town of Biarritz urged Trump to bring the fight to a close. French President Emmanuel Macron, the summit host who joined Trump at the top of his news conference, said the situation has created eco- nomic uncertainty and urged both sides to reach an agreement. “What’s bad for the world economy is uncer- tainty,” Macron said, speaking in English. “The quicker an agree- ment is arrived at, the quicker that uncertainty will dissipate.” TRUMP DISMISSES CONCERNS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE BIARRITZ, France — President Donald Trump has dis- missed concerns about climate change at a world leaders’ summit in France, saying he’s “not going to lose” America’s wealth “on dreams” and “windmills.” Trump was asked during a press conference marking the end of the Group of Seven gathering what the world should be doing to address climate change. He skipped a session on the topic earlier Monday. Trump answered by saying that the U.S. “has tremendous wealth” under its feet and that he’s not going to lose it “on dreams, on windmills.” Trump also claims to be “an environmentalist” despite his past statements and says he thinks he knows “more about the environment than most people.” Trump has expressed skepticism about climate science in the past, including falsely describing it as a “hoax” created by the Chinese to hurt the U.S. economy. — Associated Press BUY ANY 5 participating items and receive a code to enter for a * 3 charged in Florida nursing home deaths surrender Indonesia to move capital to East Kalimantan JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia’s president has announced that the coun- try’s capital will be moved from overcrowded, sinking and polluted Jakarta to East Kalimantan province. President Joko Widodo told a news conference Monday the decision to choose the province on the Indonesian side of Bor- neo island, which is shared with Malaysia and Brunei, has gone through in-depth studies. He said the most ideal site for the new capital will be between Penajam Paser and Kutai Kertanegara districts. Indonesia’s decades- long discussion about build- ing a new capital on Bor- neo inched forward in April when Widodo approved a plan for it to move from Jakarta on Java island, the nation’s most populous. Jakarta is a sprawling metropolis of 10 million people that swells to three times that number when counting those living in its greater metropolitan area. —Associated Press The most valuable and respected source of local news, advertising and information for our communities. eomediagroup.com *Open to legal U.S. residents, residing in Oregon or SW Washington, 18 years and older (must be 21+ to purchase alcohol). Jim Cobb represents a former administrator at Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills who’s one of those charged. Lawrence Hashish represents one of three nurses charged. Both told The Associ- ated Press that the admin- istrator and two nurses had surrendered Monday. It wasn’t clear whether a third nurse had turned herself in. Cobb says the caregivers are taking the punishment that belongs squarely with state officials, including former Gov. Rick Scott and the power company. State officials didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment. The residents died after the home lost power amid sweltering heat after Hurri- cane Irma in 2017.
