The Umatilla County Cultural Coalition provided grant funding to the Athena Caledonian Games to cre- ate and install the pieces of work. Sue Friese, president of the Scottish heritage fes- tival, said the designs were created by Michelle Kirby, an Athena artist. They fea- ture the ever-present thistle, a national emblem of Scot- land, she said. The creation and installation of the two metal art projects were done by Brian Freels of Freels Fabrications. The pieces include the clan crest design, which is installed on the south end of the park’s pavilion building. Hermiston women take off the pounds East Oregonian HERMISTON — A pair of local women were rec- ognized for meeting weight loss goals during Interna- tional Recognition Days with TOPS (Take Pounds Off Sensibly). The July event was held in Portland and included first place winner Roma Hall of the Hermiston TOPS group as an Ore- gon state champion for los- ing 100 pounds. In addition, there were 18 chapter queen winners, including Lor- raine Nagel of the Hermis- ton TOPS group, who lost 61 pounds. Barbara Buck- walter said Nagel is now a KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). People interested in learning more about TOPS are invited to attend a meet- ing.
