Hernandez is scheduled to rejoin the Mariners this weekend.
Hernandez to
rejoin rotation
this weekend
By DICK SCANLON
Associated Press
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
— Pitcher Felix Hernandez
will rejoin the Seattle Mar-
iners’ starting rotation this
weekend.
Manager Scott Servais
made the announcement
Tuesday.
Hernandez has missed
three months with right
shoulder
stiffness.
He
pitched 3-plus innings
Monday night for Triple-A
Tacoma in his fourth rehab
appearance, giving up one
run on four hits and three
walks while striking out fi ve.
“Command of the fast-
ball, as expected, wasn’t as
pin-point as he would have
liked it, but he felt healthy,”
Servais said. “So he will
slide into our rotation on
Saturday.”
The 33-year-old righty last
pitched for the Mariners on
May 11. In eight starts this
season, Hernandez is 1-4 with
a 6.52 ERA.
Hernandez won the AL Cy
Young Award in 2010 and has
fi nished among the top four in
Cy Young voting three other
times. He has had injury set-
backs in each of the last four
seasons, winning a combined
26 games in 77 starts.
The Athletics hosted the
New York Yankees later.
“We’ve been in a rut
here for a little while. To
be honest, it’s been a grind
here since we’ve gotten
back home,” said Rays
manager Kevin Cash.
“We’re not playing
good baseball right now,
that’s fair to say,” said
center fi elder Kevin Kier-
maier. “I think it all stems
from our offense. We just
don’t have a lot of guys
locked in right now, to be
quite honest.”
Seager’s 17th home run
off Rays opener Diego
Castillo drove in Seattle’s
fi rst two runs. It was Sea-
ger’s eighth homer during
a 14-game hitting streak,
and he drove in another
fourth, helping Tampa
Bay take a 4-2 lead off
Milone.
Austin Nola’s two-out
double brought the Mar-
iners back to a 4-4 tie in
the fi fth.
MARINER
PITCHING PLANS
The Mariners will call
up 23-year-old LHP Justus
Sheffi eld for his fi rst major
league start Friday night
against Toronto. With RHP
Felix Hernandez plugged
back into the rotation Sat-
urday, LHP Yusei Kikuchi
will be bypassed this time
around after pitching a shut-
out on Sunday. Manager
Scott Servais explained that
the plan to skip Kikuchi for
one turn was made before
his complete-game shutout
against the Blue Jays.

next level.
“The Washington kids
throw fast and know where
to place the ball,” Ramirez
said. “I think what really
threw me off was all the left-
handed pitchers — and their
ball moves.”
Blue Mountain and
Columbia Basin College in
Pasco showed interest in
Ramirez, but he was hoping
for a little more. Moore was
able to help him out.
“When you are in a coach-
ing community, you know
coaches in certain areas,”
Moore said. “I called around,
and someone gave me the
name of the Santa Barbara
coach. They had a couple of
openings. I made the connec-
tion, it was up to him.”
Moore said Ramirez, who

help, and he was quick to give
credit to his coaches along
the way.
“I want to thank coach
(Lance) Hawkins and coach
(John) Christy for believing
in me my sophomore year
and helping me develop my
game,” Ramirez said. “And
coach Moore, for making me
trust the system. I learned a
lot of things from him.”
also pitched a few innings
this past season, is well suited
for the outfi eld.
“There is space for him to
roam,” Moore said. “He has
a lot of range and a strong
arm. This will be a good
opportunity for him. In Cal-
ifornia, you can play all year
around.”
Ramirez, who plans to
study business, knows he
