A6 COMMUNITY East Oregonian Tuesday, August 20, 2019 OMSI celebrates Oregon agriculture at SAGE Center By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian BOARDMAN — Peo- ple are invited to learn more about Oregon agriculture with food science activities at the SAGE Center. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry will present hands-on activities for all ages during Celebrate Oregon Agriculture with OMSI. The event is Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the SAGE Center, 101 Olson Road, Boardman. Admission is free during the special event. Celebrate Oregon Agri- culture will include a vari- ety of activities and exper- iments — from seed identification and pH exper- iments to microscope art and a puzzle of Oregon’s growing regions. The pro- gram explores the science behind the food we eat and offers fun for all ages, said Lisa Patrick, SAGE Cen- ter manager. It provides information about technol- ogy within the Port of Mor- row and beyond. For two years in a row, the SAGE Center has been included in Oregon Business maga- zine’s top 100 fan-favorite destinations across the state. People are encouraged to check out the SAGE Center’s displays, which includes educational infor- mation and hands-on activ- ities. There’s also a museum store, which includes Tilla- mook ice cream sold by the scoop. Center hours are Sun- day through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday/ Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Regular admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors/ students and free for chil- dren under 5, active mili- tary personnel and veterans. There is a $20 maximum for a family. The Pendleton woman will make a pair of pre- sentations about a cou- ple of her books. The event is Saturday in the meeting room at the Irri- gon branch of the Oregon Trail Library District, 490 N.W. Main St. The first presenta- tion runs from 4-5 p.m. Willis will share about “Rise Above,” her his- torical novel about the 1903 Heppner flood. There will be a short refreshment break, and then from 5:30-6:30 p.m. she will discuss “Build- ing the Columbia River Highway: They Said It Couldn’t Be Done.” In the 2014 publication, Willis explores the beginnings of the historic highway and the men who created it. A lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, Willis is known for teach- ing traditional, old-time fiddle music. In addi- tion to several books, her work has been published in a number of magazines and regional newspapers. Agencies team up for after-school program WW.Friends fires up the barbie PENDLETON — An upcoming gathering of area widows and widow- ers will feature a barbecue meal. WW.Friends meets each month for friendship and to share positive expe- riences. It’s not a grief sup- port group. The barbecue is Sun- day at 6 p.m. at 511 N.W. Eighth St., Pendleton. For PENDLETON — Ele- mentary students in the Pendleton School District will have an opportunity to engage in after-school enrichment programs until 5:30 p.m. More than a year in the making, the school dis- trict, along with Pendle- ton Parks & Recreation and InterMountain Educa- tion Service District have been collaborating on the effort to offer meaningful after-school programming. It’s open to any Pendleton School District student in kindergarten through fifth grade. Programs will take place at the Pendleton Early Learning Center, McKay Creek Elementary, Sher- wood Heights Elementary and Washington Elemen- tary schools. To register, parents pay a one-time $10 supply fee that holds their child’s place in the program for the school year. The cost is $8 per child, per day and parents will soon have the option to enroll daily, weekly or monthly. The program con- tinues to search for addi- tional donations to help fund scholarships for fam- ilies who do not have the financial ability to pay for the participation fees. Each day of the after- school program has a spe- cific theme — Monday is sports; Tuesday, science; Wednesday, arts and crafts; Thursday, music and the- atre; and Friday, world news. The daily schedule includes free play time, a snack, and activities related to the day’s theme. Registration is through Pendleton Parks & Recre- ation.
