SPORTS Thursday, August 15, 2019 Volleyball: Preseason chock-full of matchups Continued from Page A8 thing you have worked on in practice comes into play, but it’s very mental at that point.” Senior Megan Bunn, who is coming off a his- toric season with 418 kills and 431 digs — the fi rst 400-kill, 400-dig sea- son in program history — called digging deep the main focus. “We’ve talked a lot about really being a unit and taking control early in the game,” she said. “We (want) to make everything crisp, and we want every- thing at the beginning of a game to be good. Last year we had rough starts. This year we are going to make it a focus that we start strong and fi nish strong.” Consistency is an area of growth Madison Pilon pointed to entering this fall. The junior setter, who last year led the Moun- taineers with 607 assists, said the team had its great moments, but also had its struggles and lapses. “The biggest thing I learned is not riding that emotional roller coaster or taking little two-point breaks. That two-point break turns into that 25-23 game where you lost that match because you took that two-point break. Con- sistency is a huge thing.” She pointed specifi - cally to the Mountaineers’ fi nal home match last fall as one example etched in her mind — a fi ve-set loss to rival College of Idaho on senior night where EOU won the fi rst two sets but didn’t fi nish the match off. It was a loss that kept Eastern from winning the CCC outright. “That burns a little bit,” she said, recalling the match. Along with Bunn, who last year had the sec- ond-most kills in a sea- son in program history, EOU returns its sec- ond-most-prolifi c attacker in Hailee Ackerman, whose 388 kills in 2018 were fi fth-most at EOU. The senior said it’s important for the team to be on the same page and have chemistry, which she said, so far, Eastern is on point with this fall. “The end goal is a national championship and we know that, and we all want that. To do that, we all have to have our grit and push to get those goals, push our- selves outside of the gym, in the weight room, eat- ing healthy, making smart choices outside of volley- ball,” she said. “That all encompasses one goal. Right now everyone is pushing themselves.” Senior Taylor Tib- betts (203 kills, 107 blocks), sophomore Cam- bree Scott (130, 118) and junior Aspen Christian- sen (310 digs) are among the returnees who saw the most action a season ago. They’ll be joined by four freshmen, including Sade Williams and Brooke Dodge, who are expected to contend for playing time immediately. The head coach said she’s not certain yet if the team will run a 5-1 rota- tion (one setter) or a 6-2 (two setters), and that the early season matches will help to determine the rotation. The preseason, by the way, is chock-full of matchups that will show where EOU stands early. After opening this week- end with four matches in Florida, Eastern will face traditional Midwest pow- ers Grand View, Iowa, and Hastings, Nebraska, on Aug. 23 and 24. Grand View spent much of last season ranked No. 1 in the nation before fi nishing fi fth, and Hastings defeated EOU in the 2016 quarterfi nals on its way to a national title. The Mountaineers’ fi rst home contest is a rematch of last fall’s fi ve- set thriller against College of Idaho on Sept. 12. East Oregonian A9 Football: Love, MW’s top offensive player Continued from Page A8 ORDER OF FINISH wins last season. The Bull- dogs beat the Broncos 19-16 in OT last season to claim the league title. Love turned quite a few heads in 2018 when he threw for 3,567 yards and 32 touch- downs. He had seven 300- yard games and was named the conference’s offensive player of the week fi ve times. The Aggies are promoting his Heisman candidacy, com- plete with his own hashtag — #10VEForHeisman. “He’s such a tremendous young man,” Andersen said. “A great captain and great leader.” Other things to know: Mountain Division pre- season poll: 1. Boise State (15 fi rst-place votes), 120 points; 2. Utah State (6), 108; 3. Air Force, 73; 4. Wyo- ming, 66. 5. Colorado State, 52; 6. New Mexico, 22. West Division: 1. Fresno State, (17), 122; 2. San Diego State (3), 106; 3. Nevada, 74; 4. Hawaii (1), 67; 5. UNLV, 51; 6. San Jose State, 21. STREAMING The league will have seven games air exclusively on Facebook, beginning with Weber State at San Diego State on Aug. 31. It’s a delicate balance between televised games and streaming games, Com- missioner Craig Thompson said. “You’ve got 30- or 40-year-olds with a couple of children and need to go to a soccer match during a Sat- urday or run to Home Depot and do projects and want to keep up with the game,” Thompson said. “We’re try- ing to serve them all.” BOWL TIES The Mountain West has tie-ins with fi ve bowls: Las Vegas Bowl, New Mexico Bowl, Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, Hawaii Bowl and Arizona Bowl. They also have backup spots with the Cheez-It Bowl, Frisco Bowl and Redbox Bowl. Beginning in 2020, the Arizona Bowl will fea- ture eligible teams from the Mid-American Con- ference and the Mountain West, which has been tied to the bowl since its inaugural game in 2015. FAREWELL UNLV has a series of cel- ebrations planned to bid fare- well to Sam Boyd Stadium in its 49th and fi nal season. The off-campus facility opened in 1971. The team moves to the state-of-the-art, $1.9 billion Las Vegas Stadium that’s closer to campus. The fi nal game is Nov. 23 against San Jose State.
