Crimson & Black Choir takes magical trip East Oregonian ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Crimson & Black Choir from Milton-Freewater’s McLoughlin High School performed at Disney California Adventure Park June 15 in Anaheim, California. Music teacher Melissa Cun- nington said 25 students and 14 chaperones embarked on the trip to Southern California June 14-17. In addition to an enormous amount of fundraising projects, she said the group went through a rigorous selection process and pre-quali- fying audition in order to be eligi- ble to perform at the Disney park. Other area schools, Cunnington said, have experienced the honor as well — including Pendleton High School earlier this spring and Hermiston High School last year. Jamie Brown, whose son and niece performed a duet together, said it was a memorable trip and experience for the students. “We are so proud of these kids and their talents,” she said. In addition to their performance, the entourage from Milton-Freewa- ter participated in a recording ses- sion at Disneyland. Cunnington said it was a great opportunity for the students. “They learned about the record- ing process and profession while recording their voices to a Disney- land movie scene,” she said. “It was amazing!” Cool Rides classic car show offers classic fun in Hermiston East Oregonian HERMISTON — James & Frances Kosko of Naches, Washington, drove away with the best of show with their 1936 Buick Business Coupe during the Cool Rides Car Show. Symphony receives boost from Miller Foundation East Oregonian PENDLETON — A three- year grant from the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foun- dation will support strings education in Pendleton. The Oregon East Sym- phony received the $30,000 grant, which supports the foundation’s mission of enhancing the quality of life of Oregonians by promoting classroom education and the performing, visual and liter- ary arts. Based in Portland, the foundation envisions Ore- gon as a place where the arts thrive in supportive commu- nities, and educational sys- tems support the effectiveness of teaching and learning in every classroom. Playing for Keeps, the Oregon East Symphony’s youth music education proj- ect, serves hundreds of young people in the area and encom- passes several unique pro- grams, Janet Miller, the Ore- gon East Symphony grant coordinator, said in a press release. Along with two pre- paratory orchestras, Sym- phony Strings is an after- school beginning strings program for fourth and fifth grade students. It’s a collab- orative effort between the symphony and the Pendleton School District. In November, a Young People’s Concert, pro- grammed by OES artis- tic director Beau Benson, is planned. It is designed to introduce students to the fun- damentals of music, instru- ments within a symphony orchestra and proper concert etiquette, Miller said. Also, the symphony’s Summer Strings Music Camp, scheduled for July 22-26, will focus on building individual playing technique and ensemble performance. Applications are still available through the symphony office or during the opening day of the camp at Peace Lutheran Church, 210 N.W. Ninth St., Pendleton For more information about youth activities, season concerts or other symphony events, call 541-276-0320, visit www.orgoneastsym- phony.org or search Facebook.
