MILTON-FREEWATER
—
Local craft beers are on tap this
weekend during the fifth annual
Brews by the Blues Festival.
The event also features cider
tasting, local food vendors (skōSH,
named Best of the Best Food Truck,
and La Familiar, which features El
Salvadoran cuisine), live enter-
tainment and a corn hole tourna-
ment. The festival is Saturday from
1-9 p.m. at Orchard Park, 1410
Highway 11, Milton-Freewater.
Pre-sale passes are $20 or $25 at
the gate. Also, it’s only $5 for desig-
nated drivers. Admission includes
an event tasting glass and five drink
tokens. For a $3 upgrade, people
can receive a pounder glass. Addi-
tional drink tokens are available for
$1 each or six for $5. Event T-shirts
also are available for $20.
Live music includes Debra
Arlyn & The Goodness from
2-4 p.m. Arlyn’s voice has been
described as “both tenderly soft
and deliciously sensual.” The
Walla Walla-based band performs
a soulful pop sound that is said to
be energetic and breezy.
Finishing out the evening will
be the Whiskey Creek Band from
6-9 p.m. Referred to as “Walla
Walla’s favorite party band,” the
group sizzled when they first per-
formed for the Washington State
Firefighters Convention held in
Walla Walla in 2011. The make-
shift group — which included
three firefighters and one of their
wives — hadn’t planned on rou-
tinely playing, however, family
and friends urged them to con-
tinue. Over the years they blasted
off from a four-piece acoustic
ensemble to a plugged-in five-
piece band — playing mostly
country music at area festivals,
class reunions, wineries and pri-
vate events.
Those planning to attend are
encouraged to bring lawn chairs or
blankets as well as sunglasses and
sunscreen. For more information

Veteran EXPO
comes to Pendleton
PENDLETON — The
state of Oregon’s largest vet-
eran resource event is being
held in Eastern Oregon for
the first time. Veteran Bene-
fit EXPO19 is Saturday, July
27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the
Pendleton Convention Cen-
ter, 1601 Westgate. There is no
admission charge.
Sponsored by the Ore-
gon Department of Veterans
Affairs, the event offers a sort
of one-stop “shopping” expe-
rience. It will provide access
to information about veterans
benefits, including health care,
disability compensation pen-
sion, business, burial, trans-
portation, education, recre-
ation, long-term care, records,
identification, home loans and
more. It’s designed for Oregon
veterans of all eras and walks
of life.
“One thing we hear from
veterans year after year with
this event is that they’re blown
away by all the benefits and
resources they never knew
existed,” said ODVA director
Kelly Fitzpatrick.

the Expo, visit www.expo.ore-
gondva.com. For questions,

Lady golfers earn
King’s and Queen’s
scholarships
UMATILLA — Four 2019
scholarship winners have been
selected by the King’s and
Queen’s scholarship commit-
tee and for the first time, all
are golfers from Umatilla and
Morrow county girls’ teams.
McKenzie McLeod and
Rylee Harris from Pendle-
ton High School, Claire Grieb
from Heppner High School
and Mykah Krumwiede from
Hermiston High School were
each awarded $750. In the past,
awards have been granted to
two boys and two girls.
There are now 18 scholar-
ship recipients in the past six
years from high schools in
Umatilla and Morrow coun-
ties. They are given to gradu-
ating members of a golf team
who plan to attend a college,
university or trade school after
graduation.
The event started in 2011 as
a fun tournament for couples.
In 2014, enough money had
been generated for the first
two scholarship winners.
Scholarships are based on
the idea that supporting play-
ers from high school golf
teams is also supporting a
sport with many important
life lessons. “Golf is a game
of honor,” said Don Obrist,
chairman of the event. “Young
golfers learn that golf is a
game of respect, integrity and
sportsmanship.
“It’s also a game of honesty
where players not only keep
track of their own scores, but
they are responsible for calling
their own penalties,” Obrist
added. “We believe the values
learned playing golf are car-
ried on to other life pursuits.”
The tournament will be
played this weekend, July
20-21, at Big River Golf
Course in Umatilla.
For more information on
the scholarship, call Craig
Lockwood at 541-701-5070.
