Early rounds nearing the end at Wimbledon

T
he third grand slam tournament of
the 2019 ITF season, the Wimbledon
Championships, is underway at the All
England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber
look to defend their titles in the singles
competitions from last year. Tune in Sun-
day, July 7, to catch early-round action
on ABC.
After winning the Australian Open
in January for the first time since 2016,
Djokovic looked like he could make a
push for a grand slam (the capture of all
four Grand Slam titles in the same year).
When he reached the semifinals of the
French Open, he was riding a 26-match
winning streak and hadn’t lost a Grand
Slam match in more than a year. However,
his streak was broken by Dominic Thiem
in a four-hour, five-set match that ran for
two days. Djokovic will look to rebound
at Wimbledon, where he has a strong and
winning record, having captured four
titles in five final appearances.
Thiem is enjoying a breakthrough year,
having already won a number of ATP
titles, including his first Masters 1000
title with a victory over Roger Federer at
Indian Wells. At the French Open, Thiem
reached the final, where he met Rafael
Nadal and was defeated by “The King of
Clay” for the second consecutive year. His
focus is now on claiming his first Grand
Slam title, which seems to be only a mat-
ter of time, given his current form. He has
two opportunities to do so: with a win at
Wimbledon or at the U.S. Open in August.
Early-round action is coming to an end,
and players are preparing for the finals.

7. The action picks back up on Monday at
the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet
