Pendleton Altrusa installs 2019-20 officers
PENDLETON — Megan Lauer was
recently installed as president of Altrusa
International of Pendleton.
Directors of the service club for 2019-
20 are Shelley Atkinson, Joyce Follis,
Jan Loughary, Terri Taber, Susan Neal
and Karen Hoeft. In addition, officers
include Sofi Smith, immediate past presi-
dent; Karin Power, president-elect; Dor-
othy Bowen, first vice-president; Beth
Harrison, recording secretary; Brittney
Eikstaedt, corresponding secretary; Nicole
Herranen, assistant treasurer; and Buffy
Farber, treasurer.
Chartered in 1938, the Pendleton service
club supports a variety of projects — both
locally and globally, including the Days for
Girls project. In the past year, local Altru-
sans have made 150 kits for the project that
helps in meeting menstrual care needs of
girls and women. Club members and other
community volunteers donated approxi-
mately 1,000 hours working on tasks related
to the project, including washing, ironing,
cutting, sewing, organizing and shopping
for supplies.
Also, the Pendleton club recently hosted
the Altrusa District Twelve convention.
The May 16-19 event, held at Wildhorse
Resort & Casino, included clubs from
across the Pacific Northwest and British
Columbia.

The Oregon Institute of
Technology steel bridge
team, led by construction
captain Grant Banister of
Pendleton, placed 19th at the
2019 American Institute of
Steel Construction Student
Steel Bridge Competition.
The team also included
design captain Bryce Ter-
hune, Dan Iwicki, Michael
Hoie, Cody Faber, Kayla
de Hoop, Alex Holland and
Ian Pargeter. C.J. Riley,
civil engineering professor
and team faculty adviser;
and Pat Kile, civil engi-
neering laboratory tech-
nician, provided technical
support and consultation.
Earlier this spring, the
Oregon Tech team placed
second at the regional ver-
sion of the competition at
Saint Martin’s University in
Lacey, Washington, which
qualified them to compete at
nationals. The national com-
petition, which concluded
June 1, was held at Southern
Illinois University Carbon-
dale. It included 41 teams
from across the nation.
The competition chal-
lenges student teams to
develop a scale-model steel
bridge, providing valuable
hands-on experience by
designing, fabricating and
erecting steel bridges. The
team must determine how
to fabricate their bridge and
then plan for an efficient
assembly under timed con-
struction at the competition.
The bridge must span
approximately 20 feet,
carry 2,500 pounds, and
must meet all other speci-
fications of the competition
rules. Bridge aesthetics are
also judged and considered
in the final results of the
competition.
At the regional event, the
team had the fastest con-
struction speed of 9.97 min-
utes, well ahead of the next
team with a time of over
18 minutes. The OIT team
practiced in the weeks lead-
ing up to the nationals. That

HERMISTON — Amer-
ican Red Cross community
blood drives in Hermiston
have experienced a recent
dip in donations.
Volunteer Patti Perkins
wants to spread the word
that due to a scheduling
conflict at Good Shepherd,
the upcoming blood drive
will be held at Our Lady
of Angels Catholic Church,
565 W. Hermiston Ave. The
collection event is Monday,
June 17 from noon to 6 p.m.
Perkins also expressed
appreciation for those who
have donated the past cou-
ple of months. Recent blood
drives included the col-
lection of 18 units from 24
donors during the April 15
drive held at Good Shepherd
Medical Center. Also, 26
units were collected from 40
donors at the May 20 drive
at New Hope Community
Church. Perkins also said
homemade treats for donors
were provided by the Herm-
iston Emblem Club and
Eastern Star.
According to Perkins,
approximately 35% of the
population is eligible to
donate blood, yet only 8%
of those people actually do.
Perkins said the Red Cross
has a continual need for
donors to keep a sustainable
supply of blood products for
local hospitals.
While walk-ins are wel-
come during collection
events, Perkins said it’s
helpful for the scheduling
volunteers if people make
an appointment by calling
1-800-448-3543. In addi-
tion, she said a Red Cross
app is available that can be
used to make appointments,
complete the Rapid Pass and
keep track of your donation
totals.

paid off as they whittled
their time down to 6.08 min-
utes at the national finals,
which earned them a fourth
place finish in both the con-
struction speed and con-
struction economy (speed/
weight) categories.
“This is a phenome-
nal representation of our
institution and program on
a national stage, and the
team’s construction perfor-
mance was truly inspiring,”
Riley said. “The steel bridge
team next year now has a lot
of experience and knowl-
edge to build from … to par-
ticipate next year.”

Oral Health Program
brushes up with grants
PENDLETON – Inter-
Mountain
Education
Service District recently
received several grants for
its Oral Health Program.
The project, which
serves students in Eastern
Oregon, received $60,000
from the Oregon Com-
munity Foundation for
the 2019-20 school year.
It’s the final year of a fund-
ing commitment launched
by OCF in 2014 to address
childhood dental disease
across the state. The proj-
ect included a goal of
building partnerships with
other funding sources to
support dental resources
for students.
The education service
district also received $6,115
from the Good Shep-
herd Community Health
Foundation, $4,488 from
the Wildhorse Founda-
tion, $1,630 from Pendle-
ton Foundation Trust and
$1,000 from the Hermis-
ton Kiwanis Club. It will
provide dental health edu-
cation materials to schools
in Umatilla and Morrow
counties. Each elemen-
tary school will receive its
own mini dental education
lab with lessons on dental
hygiene.
Another part of the Oral
Health Program involves
expanded practice dental
hygienists from Advan-
tage Dental and Den-
taQuest. They provide
screenings, fluoride treat-
ment, sealants, dental kits
and referrals for pre-kin-
dergarten through 12th
grade students. From July
1, 2018, through March 31,
2019, the program served
more than 8,000 students.
Cathy
Wamsley,
IMESD’s
school-based
Oral Health Program coor-
dinator, is thrilled with the
support from the founda-
tions, the local service club
and providers. The money,
she said, will ensure the
sustainability of the pro-
gram through the 2019-20
school year and beyond.
