No void in Lloyd: USWNT kick off their 2019 World Cup campaign against Thailand

T
he eighth FIFA Women’s World Cup
is underway in France with the first
round of group stage matches. Tune in
Tuesday, June 11, to catch the defending
champion United States take on Thailand
in its first matchup of the tournament.

Entering the tournament as defend-
ing champion, the United States was
drawn to Group F along with Thailand,
Chile and Sweden. Thailand qualified for
the World Cup by placing fourth at the
AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Chile (which
is making its first finals appearance at
this tournament) was runner-up at the
Copa América Femenina. Sweden won
Group 4 in the European qualification
tournament. Ranked No. 1 in the world,
the United States is the favorite to win
this year’s World Cup and should advance
from Group F with relative ease.
The United States won its third World
Cup in 2015 when it defeated Japan in
the final at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancou-
ver, Canada. Captain Carli Lloyd scored a
hat trick in the first 16 minutes of the final
and leads the USWNT in France, along
with Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe.
The United States enters the tournament
strong — the Americans have not lost a
game since January and are riding a six-
game winning streak after Lloyd scored
five goals in the last four games. Look for
Samantha Mewis, making her World Cup
debut for the United States, to have a big
tournament. At 26 years of age, Mewis
is in top form and has the potential to fill
Lloyd’s position in the midfield following
the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo when Lloyd
plans to retire.
