Pendleton shuts out
Crescent Valley in
quarterfinals battle
They may have taken four innings to
bring the bats, but the Bucks are now on
their way to the 5A semifinals.
On Friday’s quarterfinals baseball
contest at Crescent Valley, the Pendleton
Buckaroos kept the Raiders off of home
plate for a 6-0 shut out.
Cooper Roberts, who threw just one
strikeout over a full game on the mound,
never let a single run slip by him.
“Cooper threw a heck of a game,” said
Pendleton coach TJ Haguewood. “He just
pounded the zone, kept guys off-balance,
and let his defense work behind him.
He worked ahead of the count. He was
always in control.”
Three innings went by without a run
from either team.
“It was moving along quickly,” Hauge-
wood said. “It was good baseball. Their
pitcher (Ethan Krupp) was doing a good
job of mowing us down, and Cooper did
the same to them.”
The Bucks finally broke the game
open in the top of the fourth. On a 1-0
count, Quinn Doherty singled on a line
drive to right field, and advanced to sec-
ond on Ryan Stahl’s single on the follow-
ing at-bat.
Tanner Sweek doubled on a full-
count pitch to right field to score the two
runners.
“That was huge,” Haguewood said. “It
finally broke the ice.”
In the top of the fifth, Ty Beers doubled
to right field and scored Curtis Simons,
who was running for Justin Duso.
Sweek singled to lead off the next
inning and took second base on a wild
pitch. Kyle Field’s single sent him to third,
and he scored on an error during the next
at-bat to put the Bucks ahead 4-0.
The Bucks put up two more runs in
the top of the seventh, including an RBI
single from Matthew Demianew.
Sweek went 2-for-3 at the plate and
posted a run and two RBIs to lead Pend-
leton’s offense. Stahl hit 3-for-4 with two

Pendleton freshman Sam Jennings made
a big splash at the 5A State Track and Field
Championships Friday, placing fourth in the
javelin with a toss of 181 feet, 7 inches at Mt.
Hood Community College.
Jennings’ previous best this season was
162-7. The Pendleton school record is 186-
10, set by Geoff Herd in 2009.
“Oh, my gosh,” Pendleton coach Larry
Brizendine said. “He threw 181 feet — that
was crazy. He just let it fly.”
Ty Hampton of North Bend won the
event with a mark of 213-11, breaking the
state record of 205-8, set by Garrett Snow of
Eagle Point in 2012.
Edwin Linares picked up a silver medal
in the triple jump, soaring 43-9½. He fin-
ished 10th at state last year in the event.
Sophomore Emma House finished eighth
in the javelin with a toss of 107 feet, 2
inches, which came on her second throw in
the finals.
“Emma was told she did not make the
finals,” Brizendine said. “She was sitting up
in the stands when they called for her. She

Championships at Mt. tahoma High
School in Tacoma, missing the podium
by a half-inch.
Palzinski’s top mark of 40 feet, 7½
inches came on her final throw in the
finals. Her first throw of 39-8¼ in the
prelims put her into the finals.
Kiana Lino of Shorecrest won the
event with a throw of 44-10.
“I am so proud of her,” Hermiston
coach Emilee Strot said of Palzinski. “It
was her best series ever; she has to be
happy with that. It’s unfortunate that she
missed the podium, but there was good
competition. There were really good
marks and a lot of the girls were excited,
which sparks the competition.”
The Hermiston boys 4x100 relay
team of Broc Remmer, Thomas Rea-
gan, DJ Wilson and Garrett Walchli fin-

Walchli finished 14th in the 200
prelims with a time of 23.14 seconds.
Dorien Simon of Lakes had the fastest
qualifying time of 21.54.
“It’s exciting,” Strot said. “Every kid
we have with us here has the possibility
of coming back next year. I think they
are thankful for the experience.”

urday. Jazlyn Romero throws the javelin

out.”

time of 14.43, while Maher crossed the fin-
