A8 SPORTS East Oregonian Thursday, May 23, 2019 Hermiston to play defending champs The Bulldogs will take on Bonney Lake at noon Friday Hermiston’s Bailee Noland likely will get the start Friday against Bonney Lake at the 3A state tournament. By ANNIE FOWLER East Oregonian Staff photo by E.J. Harris, File The Hermiston softball team was making good use of Kennison Field this week, working on its defensive skills. With the 3A state tour- nament being played at the Regional Athletic Com- plex in Lacey, Washing- ton, which has artifi cial turf on the infi eld and grass in the outfi eld, the Bulldogs needed to get a feel for the playing surface. “That’s why we have been on the football fi eld all week,” Hermiston coach Kate Greenough said. “If we didn’t have that, we wouldn’t get the preparation we need.” The Bulldogs (16-8), the No. 2 team from District 8, will open state play at noon Friday against Bonney Lake (20-2). “They look like they are a good team,” Greenough said. “They have a good pitcher. We have to play them sometime. We might as well get them out of the way fi rst. The good thing about softball, is any day, anybody can hang.” The defending state champion Panthers feature LOCAL ROUNDP pitcher Brooke Nelson, who is headed to the University of Washington in the fall. Nelson also was named the 2018 Gatorade Wash- ington Player of the Year after ringing up 306 strike- outs, six no-hitters and hit- ting 21 home runs. The Bulldogs, who were the No. 3 seed from the Mid-Columbia Conference in the District 8 tourna- ment, have played some of their best ball the past two weeks. The Bulldogs won back- to-back games against Sha- dle Park and Kennewick to reach the title game against Southridge, which the Suns won 4-2. Hermiston came back to earn the second seed to state with a win over Kennewick. “They are super excited to represent their confer- ence,” Greenough said of her team. “It has been exciting to see them turn the tide a lit- tle bit. They have only had two errors in the past four games. They have picked a good time to play like they can.” The Bulldogs have come to rely on junior Bailee Noland in the cir- cle the last half of the sea- son, and she’s also been productive at the plate, hit- ting .597 with 30 RBIs and seven home runs. The Bulldogs’ team bat- ting average is .385, and they are averaging 7.3 runs per game. SCOREBOARD Mac-Hi softball cruises to 4A playoff victory East Oregonian Mac-Hi’s softball team, which took second in the Greater Oregon League standings, proved that round one of the 4A state playoffs was not much of a problem, either. On Wednesday, the Pio- neers breezed through a fi ve-inning, 14-3 home vic- tory against Stayton. The Pioneers put up four runs in their fi rst offensive showing, but they would outdo themselves one inning later, scoring six in the bottom of the second. Courtney Cain, Graci Bullock, Ashlyn Marly, and Bella Perkins all drove in runs. Meanwhile, Stayton was still without a run. The Pioneers tallied 16 runs for the day — 10 more than Stayton. Cain hit a perfect 2-for-2, scoring two runs and four RBIs. Bullock’s 3-for-4 showing in the batter’s box scored three runs and put three more runs on the board, and Perkins added four more RBIs. On Friday, Mac-Hi trav- els to Banks for the 4A quarterfi nals. Westside Mobile Media will broad- cast the game over the radio. First pitch is at 3 p.m. 2A/1A softball LAKEVIEW 5, WESTON-MCEWEN 0 — Lakeview pitcher Aly- son Yates fanned nine and held Weston-McEwen without a run to knock the TigerScots out of the run- ning for the state title on Wednesday. We s t o n - M c Ewe n pitcher McKenna Stall- ings threw nine strikeouts of her own, but gave up 12 hits and fi ve runs as the Honkers kept the game in their favor. Stallings also went 3-for-4 at the plate, but never made it home. The round two loss ended the TigerScots’ playoff run.
