The fray on clay: Halep looks to defend title, 4ederer returns to 4rench Open

T
he second Grand Slam tennis tourna-
ment is underway at Stade Roland
Garros for the 2019 French Open. There is
plenty to watch for as third-round action
is served on Saturday, June 1, with live
coverage on NBC.
All eyes are on Simona Halep, who en-
tered the tournament looking to defend
her title from last year. After reaching four
Grand Slam tournament finals, her French
Open title is the first Grand Slam win of
her professional career. After 48 weeks at
the top of the WTA rankings, Halep lost
her No. 1 ranking to newcomer Naomi
Osaka following Osaka’s Australian Open
win in January. At only 21 years of age,
Osaka has already won two Grand Slam
titles and only needs wins at the French
Open and Wimbledon to earn a career
Grand Slam.
Roger Federer is competing in the
spring clay season for the first time in
three years. Given his age of 37, the Swiss
tennis great has normally chosen to rest
during the spring months and focus on his
strength of competing on hard and grass
surfaces. This is his first French Open since
his straight-set quarter-final defeat to
Stan Wawrinka in 2015. This year’s tour-
nament also marks the 10-year anniver-
sary since Federer’s first and only French
Open title, in 2009. If Federer hopes to
celebrate another French Open title, he
will more than likely have to do it against
“king of clay” Rafael Nadal, who is look-
ing to threepeat as champion for the third
time in his career (including a record five-
year run from 2010 to 2014) and win his
12th French Open title.

herself up for a non-calendar year Grand
Slam heading into Wimbledon in July.
