SPORTS Thursday, May 16, 2019 East Oregonian A9 Bucks fi nish with a flourish, rally to top Raptors 108-100 By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer MILWAUKEE — Down for most of the game, clearly rusty at times after nearly a full week off, the Milwaukee Bucks looked very much like a team in trouble. Until the fourth quarter. The team with the NBA’s best record this season found its stride at the perfect time. Brook Lopez scored 13 of his career playoff-high 29 points in the fourth quarter, Giannis Antetok- ounmpo added 24 points and the Bucks closed the game on a 10-0 run to beat the Toronto Raptors 108-100 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference fi nals on Wednesday night. Milwaukee forced Toronto into missing its fi nal eight shots and outscored the Raptors 32-17 in the fourth. “I think it speaks a little bit to the character of the group,” Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said. “They just stick with it. I think it’s become a little bit of a theme in the playoffs: I think eventually, hope- fully, we feel like if we stick with what we’re doing good things will happen for us.” Lopez had a dunk with 2:20 left to put the Bucks ahead for good, added a 3-pointer on the next Mil- waukee possession to push the lead to four and the Bucks — after trailing for most of the game — did just enough in the fi nal min- utes to grab the series lead. Malcolm Brogdon scored 15 and Nikola Mirotic had 13 for Milwaukee. “Total team effort,” Lopez said. Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points and Kyle Lowry added 30 for the Raptors, who led by as many as 13 early and took an 83-76 lead into the fi nal quarter. Lowry Christman: Second gold? Continued from Page A8 an adjustment,” Christman said. “And, Kaylee and I just got through running the 3,000 (at district), and we had to turn around and run another lap. That does not help your time.” What the future holds This weekend likely will be the fi nal laps Christman will run com- petitively. She is headed to the University of Mon- tana, where she will study pre-med. Christman has a 4.0 GPA and will be co-vale- dictorian of her class when it graduates May 26. “I’ve been approached a few times about running,” she said. “But if I am on a team, it might be a distrac- tion and it would be hard to get in on research pro- grams because I wouldn’t have the time. I want to graduate, go to med school and be a neurologist. I will miss competing. I have run cross-county and track and played basketball in high school. It’s a part of me.” was 5 for 7 in the fourth — and his teammates were 0 for 15 in that deciding quarter. “Fourth quarter killed us, 32-17,” Lowry said. “They out- played us in that fourth quarter. They got a little bit more aggres- sive. They made some big shots, made some big plays. It sucks when you lose like that. But we had our chance and we’ve got to learn from it.” Lopez added 11 rebounds for the Bucks, who had three play- ers post double-doubles. Ante- tokounmpo had 14 rebounds and Khris Middleton fi nished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Mil- waukee, which is now 9-1 in this postseason. The Bucks trailed for 37 of the game’s 48 minutes. Didn’t matter. They stayed just close enough until they could fi n- ish with a serious kick. PREP ROUNDUP Mustangs take down Stanfi eld/Echo in BMC contest East Oregonian Heppner/Ione ran in seven in the bottom of the second inning on the way to a fi ve inning 11-1 defeat of their Stanfi eld/Echo hosts on Wednesday in a Blue Mountain Conference game.
