after the sun welcomed athletes and fans
to the Kiwanis twilight invitational on Fri-
day, the rain began to fall on the meet at
Kennison Field for the first time in recent
memory.
Event sheets were soggy, as were the ath-
letes, but the rain did not put a damper on
the event.
Kamiakin ran away with the boys title
with 233 points, while Hanford and Kami-
akin fought to the bitter end for the girls
team title.
the Braves, who had a 1.5-point lead
over the Falcons heading into the 4x400
relay, came away with the title (160.5 points)
because Hanford (156) did not field a mile
relay team. Hermiston finished third.
Jaxson Nichols of Kamiakin, who won
the high jump and long jump, and was sec-
ond in the triple jump, was the boys high-
point athlete of the meet.
For the girls, the honor was shared by

junior lane Maher, who won the 300 hur-
dles (39.58), and was second in the 110 hur-
dles (14.74) behind parker Morgan of Kami-
akin (14.72). Both times were personal bests
for Maher.
Maher was seeded sixth entering the 110
hurdle race.
“i knew they had faster times than me
coming in, and getting higher than that
(sixth) is joyful,” Maher said. “it feels good
to compete against faster people.”
Morgan said he didn’t know anything
about Maher coming into the race.
“i was more worried about Beau (Frank-
lin of Hanford),” Morgan said. “My goal was
to break 15 (seconds), and meets like this
push me.”
in the 300 hurdles, Maher pulled away
from Morgan just before the last hurdle.
“i was trying to go as fast as i could,”
Maher said. “He was right next to me, then
i pulled away at the end. this and the Wil-
lamette meet are the best i’ve been to this
year. Maybe i should join Washington
conference.”

all it took was seven innings
for Hermiston’s softball team
to add two more Mid-Colum-
bia Conference wins to their
record.
On Friday, the Bulldogs
enacted the Wiaa’s 15-run rule
twice in a row, ending game one
against the visiting pasco Bull-
dogs 18-2 in four innings, and
game two with a 15-0 shutout in
three.
the wins follow tues-
day’s doubleheader losses at
Kennewick.
“it’s exciting,” coach Kate
Greenough said of her team’s
back-to-back blowouts. “after
tuesday, it was nice to score
some runs and hold down our
defense.”
Pasco opened the first
game with an early 1-0 lead,
but Hermiston was quick to
respond, posting four runs at
the bottom of the first to stay
out front for good.
Bailee Noland, who would
not be denied at the plate, hit
a two-RBI single in the first
inning, and followed that with
a grand slam at her next at-bat.
She hit a perfect 3 for 3 with
three runs and seven rBis
scored.
Hermiston also took advan-
tage of pasco’s defensive weak-
nesses, stealing 18 bases in the
first game alone. And Pasco
pitcher Brizeida Quiroz, who
gave up 18 runs on 11 hits and
nine walks, couldn’t manage a
strikeout.
“that really helped us,”
Noland said of pasco’s pitch-
ing. “Our team is used to see-
ing higher-speed pitching, and
a lot of change-ups. We jumped
on their straight-up fastballs
today.”
Noland hit an rBi-double in
the bottom of the third to aid in
a five-run streak. Ashley Cam-
eron hit one of her own in the
fourth to wrap the game up. the
double solidified her perfect
batting performance, where she
hit 2 for 2 with three runs and
three rBis.
the dawgs sent 12 batters to
the plate in the second inning
of game two, resulting in eight
runs, half of which came before
pasco put an out on the board.
