WORLD IN BRIEF Wednesday, February 27, 2019 One-on-one: Trump, Kim confront North Korea’s nuke plans HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — With nervous world capitals look- ing on, President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un are beginning their second nuclear summit with a one-on- one discussion and an intimate dinner as hard questions swirl about what the American presi- dent will demand and Pyongyang might be willing to give up. The two leaders and their aides encamped in Hanoi after long journeys by plane, train and automobile for two days of talks addressing perhaps the world’s biggest security challenge: Kim’s nuclear program that stands on the verge of realistically threaten- ing targets around the planet. Although many experts are skeptical Kim will give up the nuclear weapons he likely sees as his best guarantee of continued rule, there was a palpable excite- ment among many in Hanoi as final preparations were made for Wednesday’s summit opening. There were also huge traffic jams in the already congested streets. United Methodist delegates defeat bid to ease LGBT bans ST. LOUIS (AP) — The United Methodist Church, America’s second-largest Protestant denom- ination, faces a likely surge in defections and acts of defiance after delegates at a crucial confer- East Oregonian ence on Tuesday rejected a move to ease the faith’s ban on same- sex marriage and ordination of LGBT clergy. Some supporters of greater LGBT inclusion were in tears, while others vented their anger after delegates, on a 449-374 vote, defeated a proposal that would have let regional and local church bodies decide for themselves on gay-friendly policies. “Devastation,” was how for- mer Methodist pastor Rebecca Wilson of Detroit described her feelings. “As someone who left because I’m gay, I’m waiting for the church I love to stop bringing more hate.” Delegates then took up a com- peting measure, known as the Traditional Plan, that would tighten enforcement of the LGBT bans and encourage Method- ists who oppose those policies to leave the church. It won majority support in a preliminary vote on Monday. The Traditional Plan’s suc- cess was due to an alliance of conservatives from the U.S. and overseas.
