Harry Shum Jr. Dancing his way to the top By Shona Dustan TV Media Some people seem to be born with the knowledge of what they’re meant to do with their lives, but most of us are forced to figure it out slowly and sometimes painfully. Watching Harry Shum Jr. perform certainly leaves one with the impression that he was always meant for the limelight, but actually it was a high school dare that set him on a path to fame. Shum was born in Costa Rica to Chinese parents, and his family moved to San Francisco when he was 6 years old. He excelled at sports and enjoyed theater, so when his friends dared him to try out for his high school dance team, he thought it would be funny to give it a try. After all, he had the required physicality and theatrical nature — why not see what happens when those two strengths meet? The result surprised him. He picked up dance moves quickly and enjoyed every minute. He idolized stars such as Ginuwine and Usher and used them as his initial inspiration, but he soon grew to include steps inspired by Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. He pursued an acting Harry Shum Jr. as seen in “Shadowhunters” Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9. This combination of ex- perience and skill is what landed him his big break: a role in the Fox megahit “Glee.” Shum’s role was initially a small, recurring one; he played Mike Chang who, in the first season, everyone knew only as “Other Asian.” His character spoke little but danced a lot, and he stole every scene he was in. By Season 3, Shum was promoted to series regular and given in- creasingly central storylines that showcased his many talents, which included singing — a real triple threat! “Glee” launched him into new opportunities, and he went on to star in a number of films and series such as “Caper,” “Mortal Kombat: Legacy,” “Fire City: End of Days” (2015) and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” (2016). Since 2016, Shum has starred in the ensemble drama “Shadowhunt- ers,” which is based on the book series “The Mortal Instruments.” He plays Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn, an ancient being who helps the titular shad- owhunters as they try to rid the world of demons. He is the love interest of Alec Lightwood (Mat- thew Daddario, “Cabin Fever,” 2016), and the show’s positive and progressive treatment of their relationship has been celebrated by the LGBTQ community. Part 2 of the final season of “Shadow- hunters” premieres Monday, Feb. 25, on Freeform.
