NORTHWEST East Oregonian A2 Friday, February 8, 2019 Brown says Virginia’s Northam should resign By ANDREW SELSKY Associated Press Governor urges vaccines as Northwest measles cases climb SALEM — Democratic Oregon Gov. Kate Brown called for her Virginia coun- terpart to step down over a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook. “It’s appalling, all of it,” Brown told reporters Thurs- day when asked about Vir- ginia Gov. Ralph Northam. “He should resign. And then we have the next layer of issue, right? And one after that.” She was referring to Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, the next in line for succession to Vir- ginia’s highest office, who is accused of sexual assault; and Attorney General Mark Herring, the second in line, who acknowledged he once put on blackface in college. Northam apologized for appearing in a photo on his medical school yearbook page showing someone in blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan outfit, then later denied he was in the photo. “I think part of it is awareness on these issues,” Brown said when asked why some people don’t under- stand that such costumes are offensive. “I think some of it is stupidity, honestly.” The governor, who is only the second female gov- AP Photo/Andrew Selsky Oregon Gov. One woman was killed when a neo-Nazi drove a car into counterprotesters. White people don’t know what it’s like to live in a world where they are treated differently because of the color of their skin, Brown said. “I only know from my experiences what it’s like to be treated differently because I’m female or because I’m bisexual,” the governor told reporters sit- ting with her at a conference table in her office. “That can translate a little bit, but it is not the same.” Racial discrimination is more explicit in Virginia, SATURDAY Cloudy, cold; a little p.m. snow Cold with periods of snow 27° 23° 27° 13° SUNDAY MONDAY Mainly cloudy with snow showers TUESDAY Very cold with snow Snow or fl urries possible PENDLETON TEMPERATURE FORECAST 20° 10° 25° 18° 23° 16° HERMISTON TEMPERATURE FORECAST 29° 25° 28° 16° 24° 13° 26° 21° 25° 17° OREGON FORECAST ALMANAC Shown is today’s weather. Ontario 36/28 Caldwell Burns Medford CORVALLIS (AP) — The parents of a 5-year-old boy, who drowned at a Corvallis summer camp, are suing the athletic club that hosted the camp for more than $56 million. The Oregonian/OregonLive reported Thursday that the lawsuit alleges the Tim- berhill Athletic Club didn’t have a lifeguard on duty when Tomas Barreto Pizano rode a water slide into the pool on June 18, 2018. The lawsuit says surveillance video shows the boy sinking and then bobbing up to gasp for air between 88 and 92 times over a four-minute period before he becomes unresponsive. The complaint says it took eight more minutes for other adult pool guests to notice Tomas floating in the water. Eric Kekel, an attorney for the athletic club, declined comment about allegations in the lawsuit. PORTLAND (AP) — Authorities say a man admitted to killing his wife in a note to his two sons, saying she was suffering from terminal cancer. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that Michael D. Winchester, 52, of Lake Oswego is suspected of killing Heidi A. Winchester, 50, on Jan 30. Their 18-year-old son initially told dis- patchers that his father had strangled the woman. But when police entered the home, they said they found the woman with cuts to her neck. Court documents say Winchester told an officer he killed his wife and that she had cancer. The couple had just returned home from a doctor’s appointment when the attack occurred. Winchester was being held without bail Wednesday in Clackamas County Jail. Kate Brown urged residents to get vaccinated Thursday as public health officials in Oregon and Washington reported a com- bined 56 confirmed cases of measles. The Oregon Legislature will likely take a look at ways to tighten the state’s immunization rules in the wake of the Pacific Northwest measles outbreak, Brown said, although she didn’t point to any specific proposal. “I think we need to strengthen our legislation,” she told reporters. Washington lawmakers, meanwhile, will hold a public hearing Friday on a bill that would remove the so-called “philosophical” exemption for the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, or MMR. Advocates on both sides of the childhood vac- cines debate are expected to attend. Clark County, Washington — where the outbreak began on Dec. 31 — reported Wednesday that is has identified 13 additional suspected cases, including four in unvaccinated people who had contact with contagious individuals.
