12 - EASTERN OREGON PARENT - December 2018 Career technical education is making a comeback By VIRGINIA JUSTICE For years Vocational Education, as it was once called, carried a con- notation of being something less; something not as “good” as college prep. Now referred to Career Tech- nical Education (CTE), this career tied learning is becoming promi- nent again in American schools. Many of our area high schools have vibrant CTE programs and are looking to expand. CTE programs require the collaboration of public schools, community colleges and business to provide job shadow- ing, internships and other types of experiential learning. CTE combines hands-on learning with traditional classroom learning to more ac- curately reflect how learning is applied to industry. This is impor- tant to occupations that require Education a four-year degree or beyond as well as those that require associate degrees or certificates. CTE creates life-long learners by encouraging students to continue their educa- tion at the workplace, college, ap- prenticeship or university. Jennifer Pambrun, the Regional CTE Coordinator with the Inter- Mountain Educational Service District, is one of 17 coordinators in the state. Jennifer’s role is to support CTE programs by coor- dinating collaboration between and professional development for regional high schools and BMCC, facilitating state and federal grants, licensure and program approval requirements. Jennifer wants par- ents, students, and the community to understand that CTE is for all students. “These programs expose students to a variety of skills and careers that match their interests,” she notes, “while building confi- dence, providing relevance and offering a little extra push in the "Children are precious to us.
