Burl was born to Orval and Jessie (Frum) Green on July 25, 1932, in La Grande, Ore. As one of 13 children, he spent his child- hood and teenage years enjoying all that the verdant Grande Ronde Val- ley had to offer. Whether hunting, Green camping, fishing or hiking, he rarely missed an opportunity to head outdoors. In October of 1951, Burl married his childhood sweet- heart, Loes Mae Ann (Gui- mond) Green, and together they raised 10 children. They started out married life in La Grande, moved to Cottage Grove and eventually settled in for the long haul in Pend- leton. Loes was the love of Burl’s life. Though she passed away in June of 1988 he never remarried. She was truly his one-and-only. Burl was an excellent stu- dent and a standout, multi- sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball and track and field. After graduating high school, Burl attended East- ern Oregon College of Edu- cation, graduating in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
